This. The simple reality is that the Scions are hugely popular among the fanbase at large, minus the dozen or so utterly bitter, sad, negative dregs around here that hate everything about the game, anyway, and can't stand that other people enjoy it. Final Fantasy has never been Game of Thrones. People by and large play this game to relax, have fun, and enjoy a good story with characters they know and like without wondering who's going to be offed next. New adventures with old friends, mixed with introducing a few new characters (a la Zero) is the way I hope they go.

I'm on the fence. I don't think they need to be killed off, but with quite a few of the Scions their storylines have definitely been concluded. Ali, Alphy, Urianger can certainly be left to their own devices. Thancred and Y'shtola I wouldn't mind see returned to the first as both have strong ties to that reflection. Matoya on the source seems to refuse to die, so Y'shtola can fill that roll on the first. Thancred would still serve well being a mentor and father figure to Ryne and Gaia.

Krile and G'raha I have no issues with them sticking around as the remaining Scions that go along with the WoL on his/her adventures. Krile in particular I feel still has a lot of story to tell, and I think there are still some elements to her that are quite mysterious. G'raha simply just wants to adventure along our side, and I think that's ok. That dude has been through a lot. Besides, I think he's the only 'all rounder' among the trusts.

I believe that just leaves Estenien, and while his own story concluded a long arse time ago (probably back in HW), I think he could play an extremely important role if we do end up going to Myrcedia as an ambassador to the Brood. He deserves more than just being an ex machina member of the Scions.

While he is not officially a Scion, I think Jullus has a place as one being an apprentice the WoL takes under their wing. My own WoL sees him as being someone with an abundance of potential. So there you go, just a handful remaining to continue their stories and fill a light party: Krile, Estenien, Jullus, G'raha, and the WoL.

The problem though is that you are the side character, the WoL, by nature of what they are, cannot have strongly defined personality traits, they must always be enough of a blank slate so that you may headcanon whatever personality traits you'd like into them, the only canon personality traits they have are, "generally heroic", and "is afraid of Rowena", and this is very much by design, thus a trait present in most stories in this game is that the WoL is a bit piece in other people's stories, Alex raids are Mide and Roundrox's story, Omega raids are Cid, Nero and Alpha's story, Eden raids are Ryne and Gaia's story, Pandæmonium raids are Themis and Erich's story, if your problem is that you are following somebody else's lead, this will sparsely change, with occasionally we getting stuff like DRK quests that put a huge deal of focus on the WoL, and if they get rid of the Scions in any way(which I consider... unlikely to say the least), we will just find another group of people who can think for themselves so they can decide the plot and we can follow their lead, I firmly believe this to be completely inevitable.

While I don't necessarily disagree with this take on the WoL, I would venture to say that the WoL serves as the heart and embodiment of hope that is the catalyst to victory in everyone's story. The WoL possesses traits that are intrinsic to heroism, and those are quite strong. In contrast, I would say the WoL is at a blank enough state to be able to insert a player's own head canon into him/her and is not strongly defined by that ambiguity.

I agree with this point. The scions "disbanded" (not really) and we should just leave them behind to do their retirement and get lost in some new location. I don't necessarily mind Estinien just because he has not been a scion for very long, but we could just build up a new gang somewhere else so we have that lost feeling we got at the start of Shadowbringers (until we met them all again).

It's also not much of a "new adventure" if the old gang just return and say we were kidding about going to write books, teach the lopporits and help rebuild the damage to Ilsabard.

However, I want to say that Y'shtola's pursuit of a way onto other shards is forgetting something. Omega can do it and this technology was used in the future that was unwritten to allow the Crystal Exarch to transport you. You could go to the Crystal Tower and obtain this technology if you hadn't done The Twinning and destroyed it all to test your new weapon out. The alternative option now is to try and see if the Interdimensional Rift can still be accessed or search for Omega and ask for advice.

In retrospect, I don't understand how people (me included) could have thought that they'd simply write off the scions. They're the box art figures, they sell the games, they sell merchandise, they've been with us for more than 10 years and it's still FFXIV, not FFXVII. It makes sense to me that they'd take a first step by disbanding the group as an official break with the past, and making them interact with us in a more detached manner. We're not "glued" or intricately tied to them anymore.

I didn't want to see any of them past 6.0. We were promised a new start. Why go through the trouble of disbanding the Scions if we're just going to have the same cast anyway? I just can't get over how stupid that is. They made it such a big deal that everyone is going their own way to do their thing and then we see them again like 5 minutes later, like what.

I agree in part. Let them go move on and bring in new Scions! Even those we’ve seen helping in the story.
