I was baffled going through Ultima Thule. It was so weird to have Y'shtola tell us right at the beginning that they would all be fine afterwards.

The further we get away from Stormblood, the more I realize how much I like the fact they were actually willing to retire Lyse as a Scion and give her a real ending to her character arc.
They don't have to fucking die just make them go away.

I'd like a group with Gaius, Fordola, Arenvald, Urianger, Either Marsak and Bajsaljen from Bozja. too bad Arenvald is incapacitated, That or remove the massive plot armor from the Scions.

Frankly, I am fine with them staying, in fact some of the Scions are my favorite characters in the game, general I tend to also view the Scions as far more the main characters than the WoL, who is in my eyes the worst character in the game by far bar none, and so long as we are unable to get rid of the WoL as a character, which is to say it will never happen due to this game's nature as a MMO, I see no reason to get rid of the Scions.

I don't mind long-standing characters if they're interesting. The problem I have with the Scions is that, apart from a few personality traits like Urianger's archaic speech or G'raha's fanboying, they've all become rather samey. Sure half of them are grumps and the other half are annoyingly chipper, but we're surrounded by a bunch of PhD-carrying Sharlayan monks with a samey slurry of world peace-seeking college professor Jedi consular diplomat energy. There's a critical mass of "oh yes I concur, please pass the tea" and it's overdue a shake-up.

Remember those other 4 randos Meteor partied during the 1.0 and ARR trailer? You know, the ones that became the basis for Ardbert's party?

Yeah how about we bring their Source equivalent of Nyelbert, Branden, Lamitt and Renda-Rae into the storyline and become our WoLs new compadres for the rest of the story. I would certainly love to have a diverse cast as them.

I believe reinventing the Emperor as an Ascian was a driving force in that particular bit of lore losing relevance, especially one who was written as already having had a hand in Allag. For all that the Ancient/ Ascian plot twist was brilliant, I think Garlemald lost some depth when they decided to make the Empire more or less a case of "a wizard Ascian did it."

They continually undermine themselves when it comes to their writing - they've built up to some great moments, but practically every death, injury and accident ends up getting the Disney treatment, especially with the Scions, and it retroactively destroys any progress they make in terms of narrative/ character development. I think anyone arguing the Scions haven't long outstayed their welcome at this point is speaking from a place of pure attachment, because from a plot standpoint, they're effectively lead weights around both the WoL's neck and that of the story that prevent any new or interesting dynamics forming, and as a result it's felt suffocatingly bland for a while now.

Flawlessly put, and to this day I wonder who on the writing team thought a travelling band of bookish, highly-educated academics narrating our every move would make for compelling storytelling well into a second expansion of it. I don't think they quite realised they already did the "hero and their companions banding together and finding strength against an onslaught of despair" in ShB, and much, much better, as there were much more palpable stakes and far more interesting conflicts to be had.

But even if you were to argue they were just trying to construct a suitably touching ending to the Hydaelyn/ Zodiarc... arc, the fact that they're still trying to forcibly interject them into the story past 6.0 and even the great declaration of the end of the SotSD just boggles my mind. Surely someone on the writing team must have some concern about possible character fatigue?!

As a G'raha fan I want to keep him, happy and looking forward to see Krile take centre stage. I am personally not bored of them.
