I don't know modders do a pretty good job of having avatars with bare feet... don't really get the not being able to do it claim.

It's because we're technically floating off the ground and they gave us the sandals so it wouldn't look weird when you're not on a flat surface. I also want to say it so the grounds' collision detection works properly. It's been a few years since they explained it while trying to not use a whole bunch of technical terms.
