The next FF MMO should just not do the same mistakes FF14 1.0 did so the Code and Engine overall is capable of dealing with modern requirements.
Also it should be full of fresh content which takes longer than 1 day.

I always thought the "massive" in MMO was for the population, not the time it takes to trek across it.

Absolutely.Honestly FFXI is alot closer to the made up MMO's you see ppl playing in Anime. People could have different gearset builds for the same job to suit their preferred content or playstyle, the world wasn't littered with automatic markers showing every quest objective or little flags over every NPC that had a quest you can start. The world wasn't covered in fast travel points so you actually went out and saw the world when travelling to places. And the game had numerous reasons for players to actually interact with each other in game on a regular basis. It definitely felt more lively than FFXIV once you got past the initial rush in a specific area when new content was added.
TBH after watching the anime Bofuri I kind of hope the next FF MMO goes that route with player development as it appeared they literally crammed the MMO in that anime full of options and left the players to figure out what they wanted to do or essentially develop based on how they play the game... which is how the main character basically breaks the game because she doesn't think like a typical MMO player lol.

In order for content to not be consumed instantly, there are only a few ways to design it.
1: low drop rates on coveted items.
2: time gated
3: gear gated
4: prerequisite grind gated
Beneficialways are
1: always relevent - hard to do outside of horizontal progression, but if done this way, will be gated by one of the above so as not to die early, as once coveted item is obtained, no reason to continue running it
2: allow items to be continually upgraded - if done this way, why do new content if old content gives gear just as good
If you think ffxiv's zones are empty, you should try Black Desert.
The game literally has a desert.

This MMO is already full of fresh content. Heck, I still haven't even done the Criterion Dungeon or started my Island Sanctuary. There is a veritable ton of fresh content. The issue is more people who insist on "no-lifing" things. The original EW MSQ was about 60 hours in length, and even with all of the login queue struggles, there were still people who finished it within a week. Even with patches, between the new parts of the MSQ, new sidequests (e.g. Tataru), new other things (e.g. Deep Dungeon, Variant, etc.), there's quite a bit there. But if you insist on logging in and just plowing through everything in one go...well, that's on you.
The simple reality is that it is physically and literally impossible to create new content at the rate no-lifers will consume it. And it's become the simple reality that those same people will then complain about a "lack of content" even while your typical casual gamer is still steadily playing through it days, weeks, or months later. These people will never be pleased, so there's no point going out of one's way to even bother trying.
