This is basically the answer. No amount of argument or reasoning can convince such people otherwise, so it's kind of a lost cause, but you (and OP) are entirely correct.

DNC and SMN are comparable in difficulty, and DNC was considered the easiest Job in ShB and would be in EW if SMN hadn't been changed. As it is, they're more or less two flavors of the same difficulty level, but because it's "hip" to meme on and attack New SMN, people will tell you that DNC is a challenge of optimization and skill that it isn't just to avoid admitting SMN isn't somehow completely out of place in the game.
