Hell the only time I remember I pay a subscription for this game is when I see it on my bank statement and when I get the email about it charging for the billing cycle. I'd imagine there's a considerable amount of players that are the same as me in that regard either because they don't keep track of their finances or in my case have enough disposable income that I don't have to care.

I mean meh. Subscriptions can add up if you have alot of them. But I just leave them going on auto renew to avoid potential annoyance of having to restart it when I do want to use the service because it will be that moment that something like the billing system will break...
I personally never let a subscription stay on auto-renewal, so I manually resub every month. The reason being is that I prefer to keep track of the things I'm paying for monthly, since it's easy to forget about a recurring subscription that goes on forever.

In contrast, I have a pair of friends who are subscribed to a multitude of services they don't even use anymore; from video rental, to streaming and magazines. They are always complaining about being short on money, but that's their decision.

Your mileage may vary. Even if I have the means to keep a perpetual sub, I still wouldn't do it.

TBH my mindset on auto renew on subscriptions stems from having sufficient income to not worry about it. I'm still fully aware of them being there because they're linked to a specific account and I review the activity of all my financial accounts regularly to make sure I don't have items appear that shouldn't be there. I just don't cancel the subscriptions until I'm sure I won't want to use the service again.

This is mine as well. In addition to my regular career, I have a side job where, frankly, just a couple weeks of it - maybe even just one if it's a good week - covers my sub for an entire year. It's just not an issue keeping a sub regardless of how often I actually play at any given time.

Comparison makes no sense because characters aren't in limited supply Housing is. Can't equate them because they don't face the same issue.

Kudos to the people who take responsibility for their own actions and don't blame someone else for why you do something. A house in xiv is only as important as you make it. And if you're spending more than 45 days away from the game the house may not be that important after all compared to what you're spending your time with. Get an apartment n call it a day. Did it myself some years back

I agree to an extent, unfortunately you need a house to do certain things just like you need fc house to do certain things.

Majority of which should let you use the new player location instead but unfortunately it doesn't.

I take breaks (or technically my play time is just extremely low) from time to time, but I prefer to stay subscribed for convenience. I know I'm coming back and want to be able to immediately pick up the game and play, whether it's only for half an hour in total that month or several hours a week. It annoys me to have the urge to play and get hit with a long update or payment issues like an expired card.

Let me add two more reasons as to why I can't just let my house get demolished even if I wanted to unsubscribe for 6 months, housing item storage, my apartment and fc room are already full with housing items.

    "Why not use your retainer?"
Because those are already full with glamour items that I can't put in the dresser, even if I only keep items that are actually a pain to get it is still more than the glamour dresser will ever have space for. Or the 20000 different currencies that the game showers you in, be that relic quest items, totems, savage books, etc.
Now I could get another 2 retainers but that kind of defeats the purpose of not giving SE more money.

"Why do you even have that many housing items?"
Because every time an event rolls around with a housing item that might be useful in future designs I have to buy them in bulk, because I sure as hell am not going to pay 5 bucks per item for them on the mog station, the fact that a single snowman lamp costs as much as a full event glamour is baffling to begin with.

And then you have some housing items that are simply too expensive to buy them all over again every time you end up needing them.
When I work on a house design that needs 30 glade canopy beds for a fake ceiling I'm not going to trash those 30 beds as soon as I change the design to something else.

Lastly there's the probably biggest reason, if you lose a medium or large plot your chance of ever getting that back is basically 0. So yes, even if I might not want to use my house for 45 days it doesn't mean I want to never use that house ever again.

It was sad seeing the devs give up just offering older event stuff in event merchants and just say "screw it, slap it on the mogstation".

I'm not unsatisfied with the game though. I'm just too busy with other things to play it as much. I do log on when I'm able, or when there is an event or new content.
