I would love new races but more so I would love better Customisation and some kind of body slider.

The problem is the old races look so dated next to the new. Viera are lovely they have beautiful options but they are so tall for me.

Would be lovely to fix the character creator but in all the years playing they never ever mention they would do this.

The way i see it - the best option for devs if they would ever want to add a new race is to actually add a new "sub" race, like we have Lalafells and there's Plainsfolk and Dunesfolk lalas, let's add some new lala to them with overall the same model just maybe some new touches on a skin, face, ears maybe and etc - this would be a better choice, without the need to create a fully new models and fit all of this to existing gear and etc. This is also a huge work ofc in case of explaining a new ones and introducing them to Eorzea but still more easier to do.

I think just adding more options to existing races/clans without any fanfare would be ideal at this point. No need to drag lore into it

Each new race increases the gear workload exponentially.
I'll hazard a guess that we currently have around 10,000 unique peices of armour in the game, and each expansion adds another 2,000.
Each of those needs to be tailored to each race and each gender, so we're currently at 160,000, with the next expansion requiring 32,000 additional unique gear models to take us to 192,000 total.

If you add another race to the next expansion. Instead of 32,000 additional unique models, it would require 56,000 additional unique models.

If you added a new race in 8.0 instead, it would require 60,000 additional models.

    Oh hey, an old thread.

Revamping the character creation system to give folks more options would be appreciated, at the very least.

If we're talking about Dragonflight, one of the selling points for the expansion is getting to play as "Dracthyr", a race of Dragonkin written into the setting in that very expansion.

No it doesn't. It needs to be tailored to a few races that actually have unique bodies, namely male Roegady, Lalafell, male Midlander, male Highlander and female Midlander. Every other race/gender combination uses one of those distinct bodies and the rest is done through bones scaling, they do not need to make a completely new model for every race and gender, that is a remnant of 1.0 where all of them actually had their own custom body and these models were kept for the old gear that they ported over.

As an example, every single female character besides Lalafell uses the female Midlander model and that model is simply changed by scaling bones to achieve differences like wider shoulders, thicker legs and arms or longer necks.
The only piece of gear that often needs to be different for every race/gender combination is the helmet because head models are actually unique for all of them.

If we want to talk about things that take a lot more work with every new race it would be animations, those need to be done for every race/gender separately to keep their unique bone scaling or different posture.

They really don't need more races just add options to each race now that let you customize then to look like whatever race you want play. For example, with Viera give you an option you t0 add fox ears and fox tail.

The problem with new races (imo) is fitting them into the lore and story. New races ideally need to be fitted into all aspects of the story from ARR up to current content (making them feel as a proper race of the world) or it just feels weird playing as a race with no representation in the world until you hit later levels (especially when NPC's don't acknowledge your rarity at the time).

I suppose one way around this would be having 7.0/8.0/whatever expansion as a whole different experience where new players start in the time of THAT expansion and maybe have everything from 2.0-6.0 as a "back-story" that you experience by talking to an NPC (maybe Tataru or the Minstrel, or even pick up the "soul stone" of the original WoL and re-live their memories - taking on the mantle of the bygone warrior of legend) before moving onto new content/story - that way it wouldn't really matter that your WoL doesn't really fit-in to the environment/lore as you're kind of assuming the role of a different character to hear/witness the story of what happened.

That said, FFXI has been going on for decades and never added any new races so it's not really a necessary thing to keep adding new races to an MMO. As others have noted, I'd prefer more refinement of current races, new customisation options, etc. over a new race at present.

The last couple races have been a trainwreck. Both remain incomplete to this day. Hopefully SE will fix what they have since they aren't interested in adding more. They all need a ton of work.

For the love of God, let Highlanders have friggin' eyebrows. There are much more egregious issues with the existing races, but Highlanders not even being allowed to have eyebrows has to be the funniest.
