I really, REALLY don't like having to update each portrait when I just change the headgear visibility, it just sucks. I don't want to open 2 windows and click 3 buttons each time I change a tiny part of my gearset/glamour. It's an extremely tedious process. I don't expect a player that is currently going through the MSQ to do this every time that they loot new gear (which is very often)? You know that something is wrong when you see 99% of the people you play duties (or even CC) with have default portraits.

There is no instructions to start with. It's not displayed anywhere that you need to re-save your portraits each time you change something on your gearsets, other than an error message saying that your current gearset and portrait do not match when you start a duty.

If they don't want to auto-save portraits when the gearset changes, they could at least fall back to the adventurer plate's portrait.

I really like in-duty portraits, but because of how the actual portraits system works, it's useless. I was really hoping they would fix the underlying system before trying to display it in more places.
It could probably use a help entry in-game, but for me, I've yet to encounter a problem since properly saving my gearset in the first place. In the 6.2 notes, I've pointed out the warnings they offer about previously saves portraits.

Hitting that "update gearset" button is also important. (I think this is what a lot of people are missing when they change things out.) I've just done that out of habit since I started playing. I don't mess with visor, but I'll try it out and see what happens. Short of changing race, I've been going through most of the update scenarios and have yet to encounter a portrait that resets.

Why is maching gear and job on a portrait even a thing? Who cares if I'm wearing Summoner gear on a portrait while doing a dungeon as a Reaper? Or if I'm using a job-specific pose, while not being on that job?

Certainly not because of immersion, considering I can slap a Namazu head on my character just fine.

This is such an unnecessary, annoying restriction to have.

Just let us design tons of portraits and attach them to gear sets. No restrictions >.<.
What you're describing is even more cumbersome and clunky. The system is taking the simplest and most efficient path by pulling data from your existing gearset and saving it for the current duty.

If they're pulling data from the gearset, they might as well pull it from the player's current equipment.

In addition to the annoyance of the portrait failing, the error message itself feels intrusive and distracting. I haven't tried running the final Endwalker dungeon since portraits were enabled, but I suspect the error message would cut into the narrative opening to it.

What I wish I could do:
    - Create and save one or more portraits, like I did for my adventurer plate
    - Have those portraits permanently stay the way I made them, disregarding any gear or job changes whatsoever
    - Decide which one will display when I enter a duty

I'm just a consumer expressing what I wish the portrait system would let me do. I'm not going into details about how this could be achieved, or if it is clunky or not.
It's possible for adventurer plates, so in theory it should also be possible for portraits.

Guy, I have left this game for a year, came back, did not did not change anything at all and it is giving me an error when I switch out, every single time.
I deleted sets, edited slightly, unlink glam, reequipped and nada. So you can quit the "it works for me" nonsense please. The system is broke, this is nothing to do with people not reading.

It has everything to do with that because I've done what you described and it works. There's something you're overlooking. I'll quit the "it works for me" when you quit the "it's totally broke" nonsense. If something's actually broken, we're not going to figure out what it actually is by yelling and screaming and having fits over the slightest little thing. Take a breath and work through the steps.

It's just Deveryn doing Deveryn things. Yeah, there's definitely some issues with this, and you're not the only one. There's even a bug report about sets failing to register properly.

I'm guessing it's not broken for everyone, but it definitely has some issues that need sorted out.

Yeah. This is what I'm talking about. This person actually put effort into figuring out what's wrong.

In duty it's still possible to right-click other people and see their plates though. When adventurer plates were a brand new thing, I used to do that a lot.
If I can do this manually, then surely the game can automate it.

It's apples and oranges with 1 piece of data vs. 20+ others. Whatever they have going on for plates, they don't want that happening with portraits. They streamlined portraits to send as little data as possible for display in duties. It's a quick set of gpose settings rather than whatever static model gets set up in the plate.
