The "on a whim" bit is new, but we did previously know that they change their name when moving from forest to city, and – I'm not sure if it was stated or my own speculation, but I have in mind that maybe they change every time they shift situation or culture.

One thing that stands out to me is that they seem to take names from other races a lot. We've just had the one from the Starlight event with an Elezen-sounding name; there's one from a FATE chain in Labyrinthos with a Roegadyn name; and now this one with a Far Eastern name.

What happened to the Cloud of Darkness though? She was just mentioned once and that's all. I remember after the fight encounter she was pretty active so I think we might encounter her again at one point.

My general guess is that she didn't hold together long after that. We've learned there's a lot of nasty stuff that happens when a big voidsent that's fed on a lot of other voidsent dies, and the CoD of Darkness is probably the most extreme example of that.

What happened to the Cloud of Darkness though? She was just mentioned once and that's all. I remember after the fight encounter she was pretty active so I think we might encounter her again at one point.

They mentioned that powerful voidsent are likely to be subsumed by the souls of the voidsent they've eaten before they can resurrect. We can assume the Cloud of Darkness is as "dead" as a voidsent can be.

But she came back like...2 seconds after we defeated her fully formed and good to go.

Cloud of Darkness was not mementoed and so SHOULD still be a big player on the 13th.

She was mentioned though during our first time seeing the elemental thrones. They use past tense when they speak about her.

A face from the past, and rekindling the friendship...there's very few NPCs that meet that criteria, as I cannot think of any we left on bad terms with (who isn't dead) other than one. Laurentius Daye, that elezen who betrayed us with Ilberd. There was only an off comment about him in Stormblood with you making a decision, but he's never seen there. If there was any NPC we left on bad terms with who has the possibility of being alive, it's him. That is of course if "rekindle the friendship" isn't just meaning "catch up on old times."
