No, it's completely optional, though if you are looking to finish Blue Mage side quests, you do.

There are a few Triple Triad cards locked behind it. So if TT or the TT mount reward is your thing, you'll have to do it. Personally, I dreaded BLU and Carnivale... until I did it. It was fairly enjoyable. However, I got my TT cards and never went back. So not that enjoyable :P

The only reason why I picked Blue Mage up was because a friend wanted me to play it with him. We both have other jobs. My Main's main job is summoner. She is also a red mage as well along with the crafting jobs. It is just the Blue Mage is not my thing but still want to play it with my friend.

So play it with a friend and leave it as is. Unless you are after the BLU specific achievements and rewards, there's no reason to go out and do something you dislike.

Blue Mage is a limited job that isn't made for doing the main story scenario or most content in the game. It's a fun side job kind of thing for those who enjoy playing the game a bit differently and enjoy a challenge and a more flexible kit, so I don't know why your friend wanted you to pick it up quite honestly.

He wanted something for us to do together and thought I might like it. The Masked Carnivale is just not my thing. I just do not want to ruin it for him.

Well you don't have to do Masked Carnivale or the job quests to play the job, but I'd just be honest and tell your friend you are not enjoying Blue Mage.
