I've wondered with this, if the exact problem isn't "whether people can check what their friend owns" but the consequences of not checking and buying something that they do own.

Can things like purchased mount whistles and emote books be discarded? If not, then I suspect that a duplicate would become a permanent dead weight in your inventory, unable to be either used or discarded.

And the same question for the job/story boosts. Does anyone know what happens if you try to use one when you're already past that point in the story? I do know that (having used a skip after playing partway through ARR on a character) it resets map completion, and probably general completion status, for dungeons you have already done. Maybe that's all that happens if you use a book that won't actually benefit you.

My reading of that statement is that fraudulent activity was the reason for stopping the old system, while avoiding doubling-up is the (official stated) reason for what can and can't be purchased under the new system that has replaced the problematic one.
