for a year, would you rather be secretly filmed at random moments and have the footage uploaded to your social media or loose $100 when ever you said a curse word?

It apparently is a screenshot of an avatar in Second Life. One who has purchased one of the 105 pages of 'elf ears' found in the Second Life Marketplace. Prices I've noted on the first 16 pages range from 99 Linden dollars to upwards of 500 Linden dollars. I know you can buy and sell Linden dollars for cash, and the marketplace is one means of selling 'glamour' items to get them.
You only need to become comfortable with the relatively wonky user interface for moving and interacting in Second World.
It's come a long way since we used it for virtual classrooms and meetings back in the early 2000-aughts. And yet, it hasn't changed that much in the nearly 20 years it's been in existence.

Again, it's not a "rough spot" when it just reached the highest player population ever, and even its current late-patch lulls outpace the similar lulls from every previous expansion. It's the polar opposite of a "rough spot." It makes your attempt at an argument ultimately boil down to "I'm bitter because a lot of other people love something that I happen to dislike." The game is at a high spot right now.

Yes, yes, this is all well and good but let's ask the serious questions. Will the new nightwalker class be able to use a /smoking emote?
Eehh... Lets be real here. The game is not in a rough spot atm. The whole FFXIV community doesnt revolve around the forums here as most media outlets and places where people share and discuss the game are currently favoring it positively.
Doesnt mean it doesnt have its issues (clearly it still does) but those issues arent big enough to warrant the audience to start abandoning the game and jumping ship.
