As a zoo vet tech, can confirm this. Our clouded leopards always chuff at me when I come up for medical behavior training and I LOVE THEM SO FREAKING MUCH. Our geriatric lion, before he was humanely euthanized about a month ago, would always do these funny growl things while receiving his laser therapy for arthritis, it sounded like an angry growl but he was rubbing up on the fence separating him from us and grooming himself and demanding treats.
On the note about lions, there's nothing quite like being right beside a lion when he starts roaring and sends the rest of the lions in the building into a roaring frenzy.
None of the tigers I currently work with have chuffed, but the ones I used to work with at a different zoo sure did.
Gosh, cats are freaking great. Too bad lizards are better! I love our Komodo dragon so much (he's such a good boiiii and takes his arthritis laser therapy so well).
