    They used that in EQ2.

Cash poor players could grind up a months subscription in gold and buy a month from the marketboard.
Cash rich players could buy a token and list it on the marketboard for cash.

The end result is a bunch more people doing run-for-gil and the increase in party finder/shout advertising as they try to catch the players who want to be carried to the top of the raid tier / a pvp title.

But FFXIV doesn't have enough sinks to take the gold out of the system once it's created so freely. So the rarer items will become more expensive. Instead of 1 gilcap FC house sales you will see 10 gilcap FC house sales. How many months of free playtime will a gil farmer in Shanghai get by using every trick possible to snap up all available housing then selling it to people for their cash-bought gil?

Yeah. You would have to get the balancing right.

SWTOR allowed cartel store items (basically paid items) to be sold on the in-game store with absolutely no credit sinks.

The result was hyper-inflation, and now a new player would have to farm for 15-20 minutes to be able to afford a simple crafting mat.

So, you are right. Gil sinks would need to be in place, or hyper-inflation is likely to happen.

That alt currency launch (station cash) was a disaster, where players were able to sub for a whole year for like 15$. I remember the tokens now: Krono

As for the original question, there's no way they would ever do something like that. It would just aggravate the botting situation and eventually force adjustments to the selling values of items.
