Housing: Square Enix is failing to accomplish what Lord of The Rings Online did in 07

Yeah, that's the cornerstone of the issue: the housing system is designed with a limited supply, but there's basically nothing keeping demand in check outside of the lottery.

We could have a whole host of valves to adjust demand downwards since supply is so limited (more stringent requirements to own an estate, price of estate, nongil additional cost of an estate, potential gil and nongil upkeep costs) but for whatever reason Square's decided to make the system available to everyone without having the resources to make the system available to everyone.

The lottery system is a decent stopgap to prevent people from poopsocking placards, but it doesn't solve the underlying issue of the limited supply. If they aren't going to do instanced housing, then ultimately they'll be forced either make housing easy come easy go OR raise the requirements to the point where it's essentially a relic to even unlock the potential to bid on an estate.

If players were required to unlock Mentor Roulette before they'd be able to bid on an estate as an example -- that's about the level of dedication I'd expect from a system in such high demand and limited supply -- but I doubt they'd be willing to go through with something like that. If the entire server got mentor roulette just for housing, then Square could just cheerily add another onerous achievement on top of that to keep the race going.

At least that would be a hard lockout on vanity FCs and alt houses. Heck, it doesn't have to be a battle achievement anyway -- housing could literally be a "relic" in its own right. Imagine what you'd have to show to get a mortgage from Tataru -- there's your questline.

... I could actually see her pulling so many underhanded strings, exploiting every loophole, and buying every estate out from under every owner in Eorzea. Just so she could sell them back for a profit. She'd certainly become the villain she was always meant to be overnight.

Oh I can tell it would be. Much to the detriment of RPers and Venue owners xD Which arguably are the ones who make use of housing the most after FCs.

I wouldn't be too fussed about it. Unlocking Mentor Roulette isn't as hard as it sounds, and even the 3k Commendations really is just a matter of playing the game long enough. I got plenty to spare. The real issue is that you'd be delaying the problem. People would still blitz through the game to get there, supply would be low and demand would be high. Plus, you can't just up and kick people that already have a house.

As for a relic thing, while the thought would be funny, it'd really still just be an exercise in patience, not really a detriment. Then again... I can easily turn this into a frustrating thing for everyone in these forums.

I'd say "same" if my experience trying to decorate one wasn't "not enough furniture slots". Larges just make me cry. Just give me a Small. Or a Medium; they're Smalls for Hrothgar :^)

Though, the real issue with that is me having to start from scratch on other servers |D Some stuff is a matter of trial and error, and I'd rather use my own pocket and hands for things if possible. Especially since I know how much people tend to exaggerate on the marketboards, so I prefer to get the stuff I need on my own if I can help it. I really only don't for items that either need annoying materials or require Airship/Submarines to get.

I wish Datacenter Travel actually worked and would allow us to do stuff like that with our mains.
