Dogs might be more popular than cats, but a dog race would immediately go into furry territory (not that there's anything wrong with that). That's getting the fetishes a bit too much out of the acceptable zone for most. (imo)

Maybe I'm not very imaginative but I cannot picture the lore behind such a species diverging a whole lot from the mi'qote and vieran backgrounds. Looks, will there be a decidedly doggy cast to their features? Will the dog people be stocky and large? Etc

Furry would be okay if the team could manage it but as we're unlikely to get any more furry than hrothgar my vote is still firmly for the plant humanoids, personally.
