Block rate and damage mitigation from shields aren't enough. This problem stems even from FFXI where PLD has AMAZING survivability, even a shield with 99% block rate, but still isn't needed because most other melee jobs can take the damage and deal out more damage. My suggestion.

This is the current case with WAR vs PLD. Warrior can take a manageable amount of damage and still deal out great damage in turn. PLD has better survivability than WAR, but it doesn't deal enough damage, or any AoE damage, to justify it's use over WAR for most things.
DRG, MNK were done right. They can deal great damage, but can't tank worth crap. WAR either needs to be an excellent damage dealer or an excellent tank, but not at the same time like they currently are.
Which means you either:
Nerf WAR, which I would not like to see.
Boost PLD, which I would LOVE to see.
Or introduce stances to WAR. One that boosts attack and lowers defense ala Berserk and one that boosts defense and weakens attacks, such as Defender.
Then have one enabled by default and WAR must always have one on.
I wouldn't call this a nerf. You still have your damage potential and you still have your tanking potential. You just don't have both at the same time.
I'd say thats less a problem with PLD and more a problem with the community. If you take a PLD you're supposed to take one less healer and one more DD. The extra dmg from WAR would then be completely surpassed by the extra DD in the back. If the FF community didn't lack brain matter things would be gravy lol. A good PLD should be able to survive with one WHM. That one WHM can heal the PLD and regen the whole party since the PLD can more or less heal itself except for emergency situations (like big giant hax tp skills). Community just doesnt understand this. Parties have 2 WHMs so parties must always have 2 WHMs, thats what they think like. Makes me wanna /headdesk. Take one WHM with your PLD, take an extra DD. Way more dmg than an WAR tank lulz. Unless that WAR can survive with one WHM too; then its a moot point..take the WAR.
I wouldnt call them "excellent" in both categories, but good in both categories...but they should be. Being average in both categories makes them the evil stepchild they were in FFXI. The problem is that anything a WAR lacks can be solved by throwing enough WHMS at him. As I said its a community issue, not a mechanics issue. Ppl will just stack WHMs, rather than take less with a PLD for more DPS. Don't ask me why, its just the status quo. SE can't do crap about it though, the community thinks the way it thinks.DRG, MNK were done right. They can deal great damage, but can't tank worth crap. WAR either needs to be an excellent damage dealer or an excellent tank, but not at the same time like they currently are.
All good ideas but it wouldnt make a difference as far as the community is concerned. The problem isnt PLD or WAR, its the way the community thinks. Its also a problem of content, that doesn't really require a "tank" so much as it requires "someone to hold aggroe".Or introduce stances to WAR. One that boosts attack and lowers defense ala Berserk and one that boosts defense and weakens attacks, such as Defender.
