But that's not really part of the discussion. And you can just give them your own old gear.
It is also just flat out wrong. What a gathering retainer can bring back depends on the gathering stat that it has and how much it brings back depends on how much perception it has, so gear stats absolutely matter for retainers.

This shows you how much gathering is required for the retainer to get the material in the first place and how much perception the retainer needs to bring back certain amounts of a material.

Sheesh. The NQ really ought to not be 610.Just to illustrate what everyone is trying to explain to you...
I had to look around the MB on my world to find someone selling a piece of nq i610 gear. Top comparison is my HQ 590 compared to NQ 610. Bottom is HQ 590 compared to HQ 610. That should speak for itself.
Really what's even the point of the NQ existing just make the craft fail if it doesn't HQ.
For DoH, yes, which is why my L90 DoH retainers are all in HQ Pactmakers gear with additional Gathering Materia melded in. For DoW/DoH, not at all.
The Garland Tools Database at https://www.garlandtools.org/ will tell you how many of each item a venture will give you according to iLevel or Gathering stat. For example:Discussion of further details probably belong in the DoH/DoL forums.
- search for "Dynamis Crystal," open it, go to "Sources and Uses", click "Venture," you'll see a DoW/DoM retainer needs iLevel 573 on to get the max (15) from one venture, or
- search for Sideritis Leaves, and do the same, you'll see a DoL retainer needs Gathering 3936 to get the max (50) from one venture.
Long ago, it was difficult to make top-end HQ gear. You couldn't macro it reliably (you can now), and it needed a bit of luck. Plus getting the required materials together was a struggle.
NQ gear is a holdover from those days.
People would probably be really upset at that point. At least you can desynth the NQ items or turn them in for seals(hence why there's so few on the MB when I looked). It's a step above just losing everything. I assume it would drive people insane if they couldn't do that since starting endgame crafting is already miserable due to you having to play the slots with overmelds.
