The only thing you "need" to spend cowries on is expansions and the granary.

Yes but almost everything you spend your cowries on gives you a hefty chunk of experience in return.

Unless you're going to sit there and level up your IS to 10 through gathering alone, spending cowries to get that extra experience(or to buy out the shop exclusive seeds for planting) will get you to level 10 faster and thus get you closer to your bike faster.

The only thing you directly get xp for when spending the blue is the expansions, which I mentioned already. Wasting them for other seed types has no advantage at all because the workshop values for radishes are the same as popotos.

that's not true. investing them in your pasture and garden has an amazing amount of return. being able to automate the planting, watering, collecting, and replanting of your seeds is incredibly useful, and don't even get me started on not having to chase down every animal in your pasture to harvest their leavings and feeding them.

plus doing both at the same time is almost entirely self sustaining because you can take the produce they harvest and make food for your animals, and by the time you need to make more you will have tons of produce for it.

I already covered that with expansions, the rest just makes your daily trip take 5 minutes instead of 10 which doesn't exactly fall in the "need" category.

Yes and No. TO upgrade areas, increase sell value of items, supply and demand and all that of course, but if your making blues at a rate that's acceptable to you it's more of just saving them up.
