It sucks for you and other people maybe but in my opinion, i enjoyed the shit out of it. Loved every bits of the story from beginning to the end that left me jaw dropping and got me crying throughout the entire expansion. Did endwalker new game+ part 1 and 2 as a different class to relive the past adventures lol so yeah.

This is still every bit as applicable as ever, as is the associated post.

Endwalker's narrative has been thoroughly dissected so I won't rehash what hasn't already been said. It seems that Yoshi-P doesn't want to do complicated geopolitical or military storylines anymore. I suppose the best we can hope for going forward would be adventure romps. Less ambitious, but also less likely to be botched writing wise. The Void story is cool but I feel like it would have been cooler if there was a new zone to run around in and do things in.

I think it says a lot that people keep going on about the story. Feels like that it highlights how outside of the story, the game has so little going for it. Gaming 101 is that a game needs to have good gameplay. People will play a game with a bad story so long as they find the gameplay enjoyable. But if people aren't really satisfied by the gameplay and only stuck around for the story, then it is imperative that the story needs to keep being damned good or else people drop it.

People just keep going on about it because we don't have anything to chew on right now that's of any big substance. All we have is the Void, and Pandaemonium. There's nothing big we're looking forward to storyline wise right now. That'll likely change by the time 6.3 is out, as we'll find out then where the hell we're going next expansion, and what the hell the big story arc will be.

Stage 3 is by far the best.
EW story and specifically the two flaws I outlined on previous page motivated me to write a very long-winded AU fanfic going all the way back to the end of Shadowbringers. I can have a timeline where ancients survive, Emet-Selch gets the justice he deserves and scions face actual suffering and death they can’t simply come back from. I’m more invested in it than anything that currently happens in the actual game and getting all the emotions I want from it, all thanks to Endwalker story and how it made me think.
So, in a way, I can control it, although this method isn’t good for everyone of course.

personally thats not true. ive dropped games that i absolutely loved mechanically because i couldnt get into the story (strangers of paradise, persona 4 royal, multiple harvest moons, etc.) so im naturally gonna talk about the story more than anything else. plus this is the lore forum so we're gonna talk about it more.

It felt a bit rushed at some points but it was a quit enjoyable Finale.
And that the big bad is introduced like 5 Minutes before the End is kinda a Final Fantasy stable

I think Meteion/the Endsinger works in a similar way to how Necron works in FFIX. In terms of actual character introductions she comes in out of nowhere at effectively the last minute, but she's very much commenting on, speaking to and bringing out themes that existed before that point (existential dread, finding hope in hopelessness, the question of 'there's always bigger problems so what's the point of solving any', the notion that giving up would be easy but standing up is more worthwhile), so she doesn't feel completely foreign. Of course, having a strong connection to existing characters helps too, and is something figures like Necron and the CoD of Darkness didn't have.

It is SUPER DIFFICULT to pull a villain like that in a story that didn't really have a cohesive message or themes for a lot of it thanks to a general 'write as you go' approach, but I don't know what they could've marked as the 'arc finale' boss otherwise. They couldn't pick up and use a more present narrative villain, because... frankly, they'd all be anticlimactic. Zodiark would feel too predictable, One Last Ascian would've felt formulaic, 'surprise, now fight Hydaelyn' would've felt both cheap and like a last-minute swerve anyway, a Garlean-focused villain would be... well, Zenos. Nothing already in the toolbox would've worked, so they need to come up with something new, and making it more of a thematic culmination than anything else works best.

EDIT: And, hell, out of any MMO on the market, of course it's FFXIV that could find a thematic culmination for existential dread and the end of all things. It's the only MMO around that's actually faced that and lived to tell the tale!
