I don't think it was ever an intended "game mechanic" of ffxi. It was an oversight and fixed for ffxiv. It did not add skill to the battle as some imply. Sorry but it takes no skill to press a gear swap button. If anything it made the game easier, which is fine for ffxi I guess, but FFXIV is already easy, no thanks to gear swaps.
It certainly took additional skill to use gear swaps. You obviously were doing it completely wrong if you think otherwise. I remember it took me weeks in XI just to get everything I need for HP+/- build (for the latent sorc. ring effect) and even after that it seemed like half the server still didn't get it running around nuking with sorc ring equipped practically at full health. The statement "Sorry but it takes no skill to press a gear swap button" is just ridiculous.. you could say that for pressing any button macro.. No. Just no.
Gear Swap is terrible....any game that relies on it for efficacy is just full of flawed battle mechanics.Wanted more tp? switch to haste/tp gear set, wanted this weapon skill to do more dmg? Switch to the set you had for that, etc, etc. That is one of the things FFXIV is missing. Gear that makes a difference and quick gear swaps like FFXI had. Materia should have been limited to a set number and kept there instead of this testing your luck to mod 3-4 materia into gear making things you had to work for useless. Basically the rich become the strongest and dungeons? what about them? why do them when you can meld HQ gear to be the best thing in the game period?
The materia system is fine, they should add rare/powerful materia as super rare drops with special abilities (e.g. an auto-Haste materia). A treasure-hunt for materia would be pretty sweet too.
