I'd be inclined to think a decent chunk of players don't necessarily follow the game's development news religiously. Certainly not to the point of keeping track of interviews and Live Letters. So, no, I don't think it's a case of people 'knowing better'. Especially not when the likes of Lost Ark and TESO are mysteriously able to provide their equivalent player housing systems to every player who requires one.

Then, of course, there's the whole elephant in the room where the state of player housing in this game has been a consistent controversy for as long as the feature has existed. With each new attempt at 'fixing' things only breeding more contempt.

I say this as someone lucky enough to own a large and a medium - player housing is in desperate need of being fixed and made available to more players.

I certainly don't. Most of my information comes from the forums, or Lodestone if I actually want to look through something. The only time I might watch something FFXIV related on my own, is probably in relation to an expansion release. I don't watch FFXIV YouTubers or streamers at all, and I don't get recommended that kind of content either.

In the case of Island Sanctuary, I think a lot of it is an issue of many players being willfully ignorant, and hoping for one thing. I even remember users stating that maybe Yoshida would change his mind, after initially stating for people to have tempered expectations over it.

It is a case of not making unsupported assumptions if they don't bother keeping up on the news. SE hasn't done a single thing to give the impression this was ever going to be housing and if people ignored their official statements that it wasn't, then that's on them.
