I dont know why it has been compared to regular jobs. Its a corporation. I don't write fan mail to dove for making such nice soap or scott for making such soft toilet paper. "thanks for the bonus roll scott, it shows you really appreciate your customers",lol

they are trying to compare the dev staff to your neighborhood friends and neighbors. they want you to thank them for doing a job, they get a paycheck for doing, even though you will never meet them.

i do foundation work for industrial power and chemical plants. where's my thank you for being part of the process that gives you power and gasoline? my thank you is my paycheck and that goes just the same for them.

On a side note the argument this thread has mutated into is very entertaining.
really what would happen is the people who hire and fire janitors would get notice and they would say something or replace them. though they did replace tanaka right? lol guess he left a wet seat for people to sit on. but i'm sure the people pissing on seats are a problem too

Do you get to see responses from people you provide services to on a daily basis? Believe it or not some people actually get motivated when their work is appreciated.

I'm both a programmer and an IT. I have lots of face time with the people I work for, so I get to see both the thank you's and the complaints. I got to tell you it's a hell of a lot easier to want to put forth more of an effort for someone who's supportive of you than someone who insults your work.

I don't by any means think that everyone should be throwing a parade for the work they are doing on this game. Nor do I think you should be required to make a thank you thread or even respond in one to show your support. I do think however the way that some players post their "constructive criticisms" is just plain rude and over the line.

well, since i do help provide power and gas i think anyone i see i help provide those services to.

what i am getting at is i don't go around saying i'm not going to work as hard because people don't say thank you. my paycheck and the way i provide for my family is why i work hard. i need no other boosts to make me do my job. all i ever hear is negative stuff stated about those "evil gas companies", but do you think that stops me from going in and doing work for them?

i'm just saying i don't think a thank you is required to say to make someone a good person. where i live you say thank you for someone completing something. it may be nothing more than saying thank you when they open the door for you, but you say it after they do that. i look at it and say once 2.0 comes out and is a success they will have earned my thank you because then they will have completed their project.

Here's the thing about this service industry comparison. If I order a medium well steak and the chef sends out a half-thawed slab of meat -- much like SE promised a game in 2010 and shipped out the shell of one -- I'm going to reject it.

If the chef comes out then and tells me my steak is now half done I'm not going to grovel at their feet. I'm paying a price for them to provide a service.

The same goes for game designers. They work for people who set a price that is expected to justify a level of service.

In the case of XIV, SE has offered us half-priced appetizers (v1.x) while they cook our steak (v2.0).

I don't feel I owe them any extra thank you. They gave me a choice to pay a discount for filler while I wait longer for what should have been done correctly the first time. I chose to take them up on that and that's the end of it.

I respect SE for what they're doing. They could have pulled the plug on XIV and swept it under the rug. But they chose to do right by their customers. But that doesn't mean we owe them any debt or gratitude. They screwed up, not us.

Kind of completely stepped over the point. The dev team's situation is a little different than yours. Your relationship with the people you serve is on a very ambiguous level. Yoshi himself frequents these forums on a very regular basis. There's a big difference between the two situations. He has a direct line of communication with the people he's working for as he's working for them.

There is no "That damn Square Enix is scamming us for our money" it's "Yoshi's scamming us for our money." What they do is on a much more personal level with the consumer than what you do.

The point I'm trying to make is, I don't agree that we have to be supportive of them in a vocal way (though it does help b/c of how they can directly see what we're saying), but we should at least have some form of manners when we request / complain about something. You don't need a thank you to do your job, but "This seems a little buggy, could you change this" is a long shot better than "No surprised you @#$%ed this up again. This should be like [...]"

No one is saying you guys are wrong for showing your appreciation to the devs...

All we are saying is that each of us is not "OBLIGATED" to do so....
You do so because thats you
other people dont... and thats fine too.. That's all Darkstar, and Syntax and I are saying

You can make a thread saying you don't like the complaining (Which is a completely separate issue altogether)

but don't come here telling us we're douches for not thanking them for some shit we're paying for....

I hope I didn't give that impression. The only people I consider douches on these forums are the people that are actual douches. The only reason I stuck my nose in this topic were 1) I'm bored and in between projects at work 2) some of the posts felt like they were under the tone that you shouldn't be giving thanks to them. That it is rediculous to do so. I do because I feel I want to, you don't b/c you feel you don't. I find nothing wrong with either action.
