The more I think about it, he more I believe that without it being a rare status symbol, most people wouldn't bother.

As for gardening, 99 out of 100 people give up after their first try. Just run around any housing ward and look at the purple/wilted/empty gardens for that proof. It's not fun and it's a lot of work for a small profit... much smaller than just grabbing a single map each day.

I don't know those 99 people who give up when it comes to gardening (strictly looking back at the wards I've seen). Now saying 99 out of 100 people don't clean their chocobo stable I can believe lol.
But I see more tended to/ watered garden plots in my own ward & my FC ward than I do clean chocobo stalls. but I'm not saying you're wrong- just pointing out the exaggerated statement -
As far as me saying FC rooms & apartments being fixed, I strictly mean not making them so limited. Give them the same perks as a house in FFXIV.
I've seen quite a few people say they just want a garden plot/ something to customize; So my previous wording is based off of others requests. So you can say I'm advocating for them.

If apartments & FC rooms weren't capped at 100 items & had the same item limit & storage as S, M, L houses, the demand for trying to get a plot wouldn't be as bad- but that's just my own assumption.

It looks like (to me) just about everyone wants their own house in ffxiv.
Hell, in Wildstar, almost everyone (who put in a little time) had their own house/ plot. It wasn't something that was given to you either, you had to do some quest progression to get it. That didn't include the decorating. Housing wasn't limited in number so everyone could have it. It wasn't a status symbol, but a way to kill time- with extreme decorating. You're right that *It's only a status symbol in ffxiv bc of the limited amount of plots* - the moment it isn't limited, 99 out of 100 people might have one & be happy, even the nay-sayers. (Unless when you said: "without it being a rare status symbol, most people wouldn't bother." - You meant gardening & not house plots? then I personally agree. Gardening plots is a weird status symbol to try to attain...)

In most cases, I think it's less prestige and more the desire to have something that's been denied. There's something built into the human psyche that makes us want to go after what we've been told we can't have ("ha, I'll show you that you don't control me").

Making sure that every player that wants a house can get one of their choosing would end up reducing demand. Those who want one only for prestige would no longer want it because there's no prestige involved when everyone has it. Those who only want one because they like being in a position of control (by denying others access) would no longer want one because they're no longer blocking access. Those who think it might be nice to have a house sometime in the future but don't really want one now would no longer be in a rush to get a house for fear of missing out when they are ready for it. The players who would get a house would be the ones who genuinely want the house now. They would also be more likely to relinquish a house when they no longer want to use it because they would know it will be easy to get another if they change their mind in the future.

Purple/wilted gardens might simply mean the player was delayed from logging on for some reason (I had my internet go out for 3 days last year so had a wilted garden when it was finally restored). Something planted at least is in use.

Most of the time when I look around there's either no garden patches placed or they're empty. It's not really a lot of work (only took me 2 minutes just now to harvest 8 Jute, fertilize and tend 8 Azeyma Rose, then plant 8 more Jute) but it does require daily log ins. Not every player is able to log in every day consistently so gardening is mostly dead content for them unless they're growing shards/Voidrake/Althyk Lavender.
