with the amount of high profile NFT thefts that occurring on a weekly basis attaching real world ownership to NFTs is an absolute joke

like most recently is the Seth Green fiasco where he was going to make a tv show featuring one of his NFTs which was then stolen so now he scrapped entire project because ownership rights could potentially become an issue if he went forward with the project

Another layer of corporate greed from SE in FFXIV? I'd pass and use it as my excuse to quit.

That being said, I don't think SE would get away with adding NFTs to FFXIV in its current state. I think it could be something that occurs in the future when FFXIV starts to fail and they need a way to continue monetizing it to support the company and pay off operating costs for the game.

NFT's bring nothing to the table that has not been done simpler, and more efficiently before. Blockchain has uses but in this case it's just another pyramid type scheme to pry money from a customer base. More speculative investments for get rich schemes that benefit very few. In addition, the amount of labour this would take to implement would probably be far beyond what the already strained team could handle. I believe the game would suffer irreparable damage to its reputation as well. The market has spoken, NFT's are not wanted by the general player base of most games, and those that have attempted the implementation have suffered dearly. All this doesn't even account for the security issues that have plagued the crypto market in general. One rule above all, "If it is online it is insecure".

I am talking about potential for the future, it's still fairly recent technology.
I just think that it's sad that it's probably never going to go anywhere because of how people have abused them which has given NFT's a bad reputation.

NFT's isn't some inherently bad and evil thing, it's about how people use them.
But online it's a lot easier and gets more likes and retweets to always deal in extremes.
The more inflammatory you are the more of a reaction you're going to get and reactions is the internet currency ( often times translating into real currency ).
Much like how it's more profitable to use NFT's to scam people and sell really dumb crap at super high prices it's also more profitable to fearmonger about their existence altogether.

If NFTs were introduced and players were required to own at least one of them to progress to X dungeon / X raid? I'd leave. Locking content behind them is my line in the sand.

If SE wants to be questionable with their financial practices (lets face it, they've never been 100% smart in that regard) then let them. The moment it actively affects us is the moment we put our foot down.
