I dunno. The guy pushed for Hrothgar to be added to the game because he claimed that he really wanted a playable beast race. Apparently not enough to actually play one himself.

As the lead developer of the game I don't think it is unreasonable for him to at least pretend to be enthusiastic about something other than his female lalafell black mage in the Minfilia outfit. What are Live Letters if not a showcase of what is to come? Maybe playing different races and jobs would allow him to better show off new things and better understand why, for example, there's a perceived lack of short, masculine hairstyles for male characters.

Consistently getting an entire dissertation of blm fixes at the slightest perceived weakness compared to other dps while other jobs have to beg and plead for core issues to be addressed for years and years only to still go unheard or get worse instead because the job team make inane decisions like removing kaiten from sam… is hardly something made up by confirmation bias.

I don't fault him for having his preferences but it's seemingly keeping him from addressing various key issues with other jobs' gameplay, among other problems.

Black Mage has felt good since day 1 of ARR, and female characters are overwhelmingly favored in terms of cash shop glamours - I won't say the same holds for hairstyles because the ones we've received are so gender-neutral to the point where not even female characters use them prominently. I suppose since the hairstyle he wanted has been around since day 1, he doesn't feel the need to add in playable long hairs like the Venat hairstyle or any modern male hairstyles despite games like Lost Ark being able to pull it off.

Thing is, we have 4 expansions worth of history of class changes to look back on, and the direction they've taken. Handwaving it outright as "confirmation bias" is needlessly dismissive.

Per a comment I left elsewhere:
Yes. On the one hand, I can't complain because I play it in PVP and the survivability, CC and cast time changes are welcome and I believe were necessary (although flat damage increases over re-thinking the asymmetry of how useful ice is vs fire was a bit bizarre), but on the other hand it's not alone in needing buffs - still baffles me that Sage - LB aside - has no real CC to speak of, not even a slow. At the moment I still plan on sticking to a healer in CC, and probably WHM, because their absence is sorely felt, even if I don't like healing.

When you compare the immediacy of addressing these issues to how he fobs off healer complaints in PVE, the irritation is understandable.

I think it might be feasible to say he likes BLM so he has direct impact on what he likes, and it does seem like he's more of a technical gamer, which is good for those who feel similarly, but there are of course those who are not like that.

Like as an aside there have been a few times in FFXIV patch history where SMN, who has a raise and mobility, did more damage than many BLM with less technical stress.
Maybe I am remembering it wrong, but I vaguely remember double physical ranged being Meta at one point because they were just so strong in Heavensward.

I think BLM is just easier to balance than a lot of other Jobs, especially because of how much they're spamming the same buttons it's very simple conceptually.

I kinda hoped they'd use this maintenance time to free up some more of those FC-only wards for individual purchase, since on balmung the fc-only wards are kinda just ghost towns while the individual wards are packed. In another week, an army of solo-FCs will buy up those 17 wards and render the whole thing moot. So this seemed like a good time to fix it. Imagine my disappointment when the near-entirety of it was about addressing even more PvP issues. I wish pve issues got addressed this quickly. Or quality of life issues. lmao

Well, at least pvpers know that if their job has an issue in pvp, the game will literally grind to a halt to fix it.

Guess what job was very rarely undertuned, was almost always viable, and almost always "fun"?

    It's the exact same here.

"Yoshi-P plays a Black Mage" so they'll almost always be tuned well.
There was this one time, in like the entirety of the history of the game, where I think arcane mages were undertuned, and it was hotfixed within 48 hours. Meanwhile, shamans and hunters, the known "unwanted child" classes could spend entire patches and tier cycles being ignored, even outright declined/kicked from raid groups. Blizz was never subtle about their class favoritism.

so apparently the only option that doesn't "stress the newbies" is either pressing 1211111111, or do nothing at all.
