They'd work in shutting down the mod scene. Chat bubbles and the like. People with a long term investment in their accounts, for the most part, won't risk it, and those types of devs typically won't get into an arms races with anticheat devs.

What it wouldn't do is stop RMT. Their accounts are disposable anyways. Their devs will get into the arms race both because there's money involved, and no personal/emotional attachment to disposable accounts.

That said, there is a lot of downsides to anticheat anyways. Frequently they have performance issues, as you mention. And in FF14, it'd severely damage the RP, housing, and raid communities.
