Eh, IMO make it about skill not attrition if you want something difficult. Using duration is pretty much the prime example of 'fake difficulty'. And admittedly somewhat disrespectful of people's time.Massive part of what makes Ultimate's difficulty is having to start over and over from the very beginning, it has always been incredibly tedious and the addition of a checkpoint is going to raise eyebrows.
Personally I don't have any strong feelings about it. I would totally welcome longer, harder fights, somewhere between Ultimate and Savage, with checkpoints, but I feel like it has the potential to take away from what makes Ultimate, Ultimate.
I somewhat agree to be honest I never liked how long it takes to do an Ultimate, but it's undeniable that unless whatever comes after the checkpoint packs a punch as much as the entirety of TEA did, it is effectively lowering the difficulty quite a bit and takes away from what Ultimate is, I just get mixed feelings.
