FFXI only did it over a decade after it's launch, and only then after FFXIV had already introduced it. Hell, there's situations in battle in FFXI where glamour is actually deactivated by certain enemy attacks with no way of avoiding it (enemy attacks that strip your gear will also deactivate style lock, like those red slugs in WotG areas).

Sure style lock is easier to use than glamour prisms here, but FFXI also has a much more limited amount of base gear models (it also has no dye system) than FFXIV, so the greater complexity with FFXIV means it's not such a simple matter of waving a magic wand and allowing all gear to be unlocked for all races and Jobs for glamour purposes, there are deeper issues at play.

Are naysayers really going to tell me they have an encyclopedic knowledge of every set in the game ever and the role they're for now...?

Regardless of glam, it's clearly much easier to look at what weapon a character is using or, in cases where those're really similar (SCH/SMN, WHM/BLM), just look at the party list. I guess things get scarier out in the open world because you have to click on and examine them, but c'mon...

Bucket plate gear, and World o' Warcraft's 'Let's make shoulders bigger than the character' is what really really saddens me in FF.. ZERO imagination, Zero effort into researching variant armour styles, choices. Everything my Paladin is offered, looks like rejected LEGO bricks. A blind wombat could scribble better designs on paper. Please, dear god .. Make the Design team Learn how to Draw, research history. I could do 1000% better than ALL of them combined. Guaranteed. But Instead, they're concentrating on adding elephants and other Animals that make the game more of a Trip on LSD, than sticking to the core story. It's all to obvious, Square Enix have lost any imagination or creativity they once had. instead relying on copy-pasting alike the Dying game WoW.

I get the want for fun, more glam options, etc... but in my opinion; I don't think that is a good idea. I think they should just continue to bring out more outfits for everyone to wear like they been steadily over the years. It gives more creativity, and less confusion.
But most of the supporters of this idea also vouch for Job sets to remain restricted, so you wouldn't really see a Warrior in a White Mage iconic robe.

However, you'd be able to see them in generic Healing armor class robes, if that's what you meant, but that is something you already can achieve with ARR items branded "All Classes". Just pick one of those fancier robes and dye in white. The job armor class silhouette consistency already flew through the window a long time ago, and that's not just with the restrictions, but also with the artistic briefing on some sets. You'd think that is weird for Monk and Samurai to wear healer robes, but that's exactly what happened in the Eden tier 2 set when they got a lookalike.

I wonder if they genuinely ever picked up a job from another solely based on what they're wearing. In so many years of playing I surely never did... To me, the weapon says much more, and even at that... There's so much going on in XIV's screen visually that I doubt anyone would have time to do that amidst of pve or pvp action.

What are anyone's thoughts on the crafter/gatherer exclusive gear? There aren't enough glamour plates for them all and since crafters share gear and gatherers share gear, I never see these sets. I could see them being unlocked as rewards for leveling that class or maybe completing some other objective to unlock them

I personally think they're a huge waste since, as you said, there's very little opportunity to use them. If they were converted into exclusively Glamour gear that anyone could wear then that would probably convince me to try and level DoH/L, despite me not enjoying that side of the game.

I've mentioned it a few times in these threads, but Korean players can buy All Classes Replica versions of level... 70, I think? DoH/L AF gear off their Online Store, but can only use them if they've leveled said Jobs first. It's... kind of a scummier version of FFXI's solution, combined with how FFXIV tends to handle this kinda stuff (by introducing duplicate items stripped of stats)

Artifact sets should be exclusive to their jobs, but everything else should have no restriction. Jobs with wildly different aesthetics (MCH and DNC, WHM and SGE etc.) share the same gear which means gear will rarely fit every job. It's even worse because the devs apparently don't know what variety means and jobs like WHM hold healer and caster gear hostage with their aesthetic.

I don't know what to do with ugly robes, dresses and skirts on my RDM. I'd rather get striking gear.

They're pretty cool honestly, though I'd say the issue with the crafter/gatherer gear comes from the fact that we have a very limited amount of dresser slots and plates. It's just not really worth it to take up space that I would otherwise use for raid/dungeon gear for example. A neat way to solve this would be to let us toggle between the current plates we have now and ones dedicated purely for crafters/gatherers.
