If we're talking real life military history, a military commander that's so careless that they almost get the leader of a nation assassinated would be jailed or even executed. Actual IRL history is not a good comparison for something like this. Military leaders in history have been executed for incompetence alone.

They're not kids in the context of the setting. They are educated adults who have a status that isn't freely given to just anyone, being Archons of Sharlayan. They made some mistakes early on but everyone does and that was part of their character development.
