The Mentor System in this game is a joke and anyone and their dog can become a mentor easily, therefore turning the Mentor pool into a toxic sludge filled pit with the occasional good eggs actually trying to....you know...Mentor and not just getting it so they can use Novice Network like a Global Chat.

I don't know anything about the Japan servers but I'm gonna assume they have more of mentality to benefit the community in general, rather than being selfish. So the mentor system as is probably works for them.

It would need to be adapted for the West but good luck with that. There would need to be some large backlash to fix this issue. It takes a lot of complaints to get the developers to fix problems. Just look how long it took for housing. Maybe they are acting because it's also a problem on the Japanese servers rather than complaints from their English servers.

They need some other system, tossing a crown icon and a horse (dream) to players for helping new players not working as intended.
They can entirely remove system and I am not sure if anyone cares.. SE have to be creative with in game help perhaps?

Edit - I didn't mean to quote you I intended to leave a like lol..

I have been playing for several months now, but since I wait on a (very) slow friend to progress in the MSQ, I am still a sprout and I am in the novice network channel. I don't have any issues with mentors. In my world (Midgaardsormr) there is *always* someone who answers my and the other sprouts' questions. There are some clashes of personalities, however, as some people - usually mentors - have such a huge ego and are so controlling that they get in arguments with other people, either other mentors or sprouts. But, overall, it is a great space for sprouts not only to have their questions answered but also - and a lot of people underestimate how important this is - to socialize them into the game and its community. It is there that you learn about stuff people do and other types of groups that exist which you would not have heard about otherwise, or it would have taken much longer to.

About mentors in dungeons/trials... so far they have been just people like anybody else. It makes no difference. They don't behave in a specific way, neither for good nor bad. I did get disappointed though that in my first extreme trial some mentors bailed after the first wipe instead of teaching us how to beat it.

by accepting the advice of someone correcting you, it means admitting that you're wrong.

and being wrong is bad, so they would rather be hostile.

Yeah but sadly there are many mentors out there who have no clue about the game and their advice is to do single target damage in a wall to wall pull cause reasons while the whitemage is tanking the floor cause healing generates aggro and the summoner is crying in the background cause half his kit is aoe. Mentors are as much wrong as they are right and spreading as much misinformation as they help the community.

As i said, the system is not watched and regulated by SE. Bad eggs will remain until the end of time and as long as that is the case good mentors will never get rid of the stigma that comes with the crown.

Mentors have owned a bad reputation but just being an asshole back isn't really justified, if you think it is maybe then you're not so different from the toxic mentors.

I've been around a long time now. While I know there are good mentors out there, I've run into far more crap mentors. I've already been conditioned to react to anyone wearing the crown with disdain thanks to all the bad experiences.

Am I going to caution new players about those who wear the BK crown? You bet. I don't want them to get the wrong impression of the game when they inevitably run into a crap mentor. I'm going to tell them what I said above - some are good, most are crap. Proceed with caution.

It might help if mentors did more to police their own instead of enabling and encouraging their bs, especially in Novice Network.

You don't need to be wearing the crown to be a mentor. By wearing it, you're asking to be treated differently. Do yourself a favor and take off the crown if you think that's why you're getting treated poorly. It could be you'll find out that it's got nothing to do with being a mentor and that the problem is you've run into a person with a bad attitude in general.

To be fair, the majority of people who get mentors to use NN as chat are the craft mentors. The power trippers are usually the PvE mentors.
    But of course not always.

That said, craft mentor is really absurd. Just be 90 and do some collectibles you probably did on the way to 90. Nothing that remotely shows you have any knowledge about crafting.

I don’t subscribe the whole you’re asking for it by wearing something stuff(even if reality points in the other direction some times). Try to be part of the solution and not live by stereotypes. Personally I don’t experience any harassment in game, or if I have I don’t remember the last time.

Merely defend this on principle, and I have seen mentor bashing on the forums, on Reddit, and in the games novice network (although very rarely). So it’s not fake either.

Cannot verify the extent to which this is happening just that it does.

I am truly grateful though that most extreme trends found here on the forums are nothing but a minority in the actual game because most people still decide to at least try and get along out there. This place just tends to amplify issues because only a minority of the more passionate users use it.

You just reap what you sow.

Mentors could be better I agree. But what do you expect out of a volunteer program with no pay and a super low barrier of entry.
