This is what players, new or not, read about mentors whenever they are brought up, nothing but vitriol.

So yeah they're going to assume that mentors are the worst demographic this game has to offer and magnify all the mistakes they make while not registering when they're correct.

I'm not even a mentor (trade doesnt count) and every time I've tried to help a new player, I've been chewed out or insulted or "you dont pay my sub" or "theyll learn in their own time stop telling them what to do" so I dont bother now, even if they're there cure 1 spamming. None of my business. Not sure what it is that makes newer players so touchy like that. I'd have loved pointers when I first started. I got to lv70 before anyone even told me that pulling w2w was the norm.

As for why people are this way to mentors, no idea. It is a thing tho I've noticed it a lot. For a community that prides itself on "niceness" and acceptance, they sure are vitriolic to mentors based on anecdotal past experiences.

I don't bash mentors personally at all, but I certainly wouldn't want to be associated with them. You can thank the bad mentors for the perception new players have towards them. Even I've been on the receiving end of several "mentors" on my sprout alt. I think the system is redundant, and should ultimately be removed. At the very least the rewards for being a mentor, and maybe even the crown, need to be removed. It should be about helping new players. Rewards complicate things. You'll get people who only want to be a "mentor" for the crown next to their name, the chat channel (with kick powers), or the eventual mount, for example.

Well, it depends. First as a general rule of mine if a Mentor or player is a Sage they do not get any respect from me, in fact, they are not a real person they are a Bard with healing powers that they can't do well. I once had a Sage mentor yelling at our Tank telling him to slow down and do this and that. My response was yes team lets slow down because we really don't have a healer in our party. After that the entire team turns on the Sage, who gets offended because a rolled a two bit healer.

As for Mentors typically I treat them harshly if they an Mechanics Nazi whining about something that doesn't matter. Or they are trying to rush a dungeon so they can get done early. When a person is leveling in and a leveling queue and your in the Mentor Queue you have to understand if you got a party of lowbie party members who want to run and get treasure chests and take their time.

Overall though I got a lot of good sound advice from Mentors and other players in leveling. However, players also must understand not everyone giving advice is a Mechanics nazi just screaming to scream.

And maybe the reason is cause either you have no contact with mentors which is caused by everyone just being able to put that crown upon their heads and they just put it there as a form of decoration.

Or you have contact with the toxic mentors which i see regularly. Just had a mentor in a castrum run (before the change) which flamed a sprout healer for not being able to keep up with the group. And exactly that is why mentors are hated and why serious players shouldn't touch this crown, if you want to help people and be nice you don't have to put the icon of the worst part of the entire community above your head.

So the thing is half of the mentors don't even want to help other players they just put the crown above their heads cause they can and SE just allows it. The other half is the most toxic part of the community who cares little about helping sprouts and they just either use the newbie network for their shitchats or trash on other players while not helping a single bit. And sure there might be some good mentors, but we don't talk about a few rotten apples here but rather the basket is full of rotten foul apples and there are a few good ones between them who get stained through the absolute toxic and awful others. So maybe consider not putting that crown up there above your head.

But the biggest reason of them all is...cause mentors only want the one thing and that is not erp and not helping newbies, no they want the mount and achievement that comes with mentor roulette. And many mentors admitted to that on the forums too when they asked to remove the hard content like ex trials from the mentor roulette cause it hurts their feelings to have to do for once a bit more than just spamming cure and being afk.
Discrimination is never okay. Attacking a group of people because you see some trends does not mean you need to go into a duty or interaction with prejudice. This is low key just a different form of racism. You latch on to something different about people and think their exterior appearance, in this case a crown, entitles you to think less of them or treat them with less dignity when they are players just like you.

You should treat a mentor as you would any other player in the game. If they turn out to be a bad mentor, that is them. Not something to judge all of them by.

Its because as you said, everyone else is doing it.
The main reason I think is if someone willingly puts a crown next to their name to try and seem better then everyone else, they're kind of making themselves an easy target. And to top it off, only the annoying, clout chasing, attention seeking mentors stand out. Those are easy to judge and make fun of whenever they mess up or act arrogant. But, mentors acting in good faith and who are inoffensive just don't really get attention.

Also kinda beside the point but if you see a battle mentor (crown+sword) in a DF queue, give them the benefit of the doubt at least. Mentor Roulette is a good backfill system especially for duties not in common roulettes, but it forces that specific godforsaken crown on you. No matter what you do to your status, (Busy, Role-Playing, heck even Looking to Meld and AFK, or any other mentor crown) you can not get rid of that battle crown.

Righteous indignation. Look for a 'moral' reason to be a complete asshole to someone with the support of the community. That's what.

I realize Mentors are probably doing a piss-poor job but let's not pretend SE cares much about how people improve in this game when they dumb down 99% of content in this game.

I have thought for myself, and I have seen many, many "toxic" mentors - been on the receiving end of it even. Mentors who put in the least amount of effort, and complain or attack others in chat. Many just outright say they are only a mentor for the rewards, or NN chat, rather than being a mentor. So, no, my opinion was formed from years of personal experience.

Let's not pretend people "memeing" on mentors is anywhere near the severity of racism.
