Since when did FF14 work like other games?

A lot of MMOs including the ones made by Square Enix, World of War Craft, and a plethora of other games.

Infact I would argue that you'd be hard pressed to find anything this game does thats 100% original and cannot be found in another MMO.

What other game launches fails then turns it around and becomes successful?

I dont understand how this one is relevant this happened over 10 years ago at this point.

My expectation for islands is gardening. That's it. That's pretty low expectations compared to some of the ideas going around.

You talk a lot about immersion, but imagine getting a private island only to do gardening.
