go ahead and assume that it will be preset items with little to no customization, and more like an interactive garden mini game and nothing more.

Could even be 2D and you don't actually get to have an island, just a picture of your island with sprite minions to feed.

maybe because they're still ironing things out.
and no. Overhype is the fault of the one who always overhype things.
ESPECIALLY when things are vague.
Wait and see people. And don't let your imagination run wild.
probably in development hell. lol
I'm still not gonna assume things.
At most I'll just think it'd suck.
So if it's good, I'll be pleasantly surprised.
If it's bad, I'll have called it.
if it's average. Eh, better than I expected.
I am most definitely not gonna overhype things I have no knowledge about.
My expectation is Doman restoration + pixie dreamland like world build over time that has your minions in it.

They started this feature long ago, mentioned somewhere during SHB and people got hyped so they delayed it to add more features to match the hype. They did mention farming and the EW patch roadmap lists even multiple updates to islands after they are released.
So if Island isn't like personal small plot or better then it will be a joke.

With No Man's Sky it was literally Sean Murray (founder and managing director of the company) making statements about the game that turned out false at release. There's like dozens of videos documenting all the lies he said in interviews. So really not a great example here of a community overhyping something.
In terms of the Island Sanctuary itself, I agree with the posters here calling for transparency. If they'd actually tell us what it is then there'd be no need for speculation, they've been so vague about the whole thing since they announced it. I sure would love to have a hard confirmation on whether there's housing involved in it or not as the actual housing system in the game is an absolute joke at this point. Even talking about is exhausting, let alone actually participating in the madness of trying to get a house. I personally would even be happy if it was just preset decoration sets that you could choose between, like how the house skins work currently, as I am not a fan of the decorating in this game, needing to resort to glitches to make all the cool stuff happen. Though of course I realize that would not satisfy probably the majority of players.
Farming does not mean gardening. If they meant gardening, they could just say gardening. They started this feature long ago, mentioned somewhere during SHB and people got hyped so they delayed it to add more features to match the hype. Feature updates can be anything ("update - Players can spend 2 million gil to add an additional building site to their island. Milking Shed is a new option for building site A in additional to the existing options of Chicken Coop, Pig Pen and Grain Silo. The number of minions that can be active on the island has been increased from 8 to 10. ")
YoshiP told us to lower our expectations because the player speculation he had been reading was nothing like what Island Sanctuary is going to be. It might be a private instance, but it's not going to anything like housing. If it was, he would have had no reason to tell us to lower our expectations.
It might be a joke to you because it's not giving you the housing you want and can't get. Other players will likely enjoy it because they will walk into it with an open mind instead of expecting it to be something it's not.
The other thing YoshiP told us at the time he asked us to lower our expectations is that the content is hard to describe with just words. He said it would make more sense once development had progressed far enough for them to share screenshots and that they would go into more detail at that time.
Players only have themselves to blame if they're going to allow themselves to get hyped up when the Game Director has essentially said "slow down, you don't know what you're talking about".

But it's okay when the fans do it?
