They should honestly just can it then. That's not something you want to hear from game developers.
The housing system is an absolute dumpster fire, but the concept of having a house is one of the biggest things that drew me to this game, among other reasons.
I finally saved up enough gil to buy a small house, but the constant demolition freezes and now the lottery BS make me feel like it's literally never going to happen. If the Island doesn't AT LEAST have an apartment-size building with a decoratable exterior (literally all I want from a house is the decoratable exterior) then I guess I'll join the 'resub for the patch' crowd.

Managing customer expectations realistically is a very uncommon thing.. but is not BAD. I would much rather hear "It's not as feature rich as you guys seem to think" or "If you are expecting animal crossing you should scale that back" than "I AM SO EXCITED FOR ISLAND SANCTUARY! IT'S GOING TO BE FABULOUS!". Overhyping and vagueboosts aren't good for overall quality.
You want the case for the opposite of what the FFXIV team just did, go look at the announcement for Diablo Mobile. Yup.. "don't you guys have phones?". That's what happens when you manage expectations poorly.
WHERE IS THIS KETTLE EVERYONE KEEPS INTRODUCING ME TO?
There have been numerous games over the years including the Final Fantasy Series where you have a pulse of what people want and what the developers want. With games like ff12, and 13’s obsession with focusing on lightening they choose to focus on a hallway simulator and a Mary Sue no one really liked with three total games.
Also there were two other developers one that’s known for city simulator games. When this one company announced a Mafia simulator the development team wanted to move away from the simulator but keep the previous simulation games engine. During launch their main consumer based was upset people got refunds and the game sold poorly and the publisher did force them to make the game into a simulation but by that time everyone left.
The development team here whether we want to admit it or not has listened to every important points the consumers of this game and made it more accessible. More trusts and getting rid of older systems like the cross class system.
Housing has been an issue in this game since I started playing in 2013. They could easily make an instanced housing system and let us pay real money for a castle or whatever sort of like elder scrolls but I think Yoshi P is not trying to Nickle and dime us but in this aspect I would pay for player housing in this game and I know many others would as well but we know that would kill the current system which honestly should be destroyed
I honestly forgot this was even going to be a thing, I don't expect much of anything beyond a place to wait for DPS ques when I want a slightly different background.
Yeah, from the minute this idea was announced some people have been expecting a full-on Animal Crossing system and more! A full house to fully decorate inside and out, an island to customize to your exact desires, a new gardening interface, a way to let all your minions and mounts out to play, and so much more feature-creep that a system developer would run screaming to the hills. I am expecting an island, hopefully where nothing attacks me. Whatever they deliver beyond that... ill decide if its good or bad once ive actually seen it.
Part of the reason it has such high expectations is because they've basically never told us what it actually is. They've used some really vague language, which tends to lead to lots of speculation. Some of that could be translation too, but I don't think so.
Personally, I think they had something in mind then saw the reaction on top of people complaining about all the housing issues and are making changes to attempt to accommodate that in some capacity. I'd wager SE doesn't actually know what it is yet either.
No they dont need to can it, it can still be great just not that huge as some think it will be.
Honestly imo they should just come out and describe it more. Being so vague about its content is not helping. Even if it only comes out in a 6.2x patch, a lot of the core system should already be done or at least decided on. Tell us about this. Tell us what we cant do.
That will help with expectations way more than barely talking about it.
The Fae could probably give us a pocket dimension to be honest. We are part of an ancient race prolific in creation magic too so we could literally poof a small pocket dimension in if we could access that knowledge if we haven't already in the endwalker story. We don't even need a place in the world, though it would be cool to have a place in the world.
