When you Love the Story, but are Really Bad at the Gameplay

I play purely keyboard when in content (mouse for menus only really).

Essentially, my hand setup:
Left pinky: CTRL
Left middle 3 fingers: movement (WADS), autorun (R), cancel targets (escape)
Left thumb: Jump (Space), ALT

Right pinky: + and Enter key
Right middle 3 fingers: 1-9 keys
Right thumb: 0, camera (arrow keys)

I absolutely love playing on controller and am unlikely to ever want to play another MMO with mouse+keyboard again.

Controller is weird starting out, but it is (IMO) the superior FFXIV experience.

What controller do you use? I'm starting to think this may be the avenue I have to go to, I have a xbox controller but it's too big for my hands so it felt like a struggle lol. I have baby hands.

That's an interesting point actually - was discussing this with some friends earlier, one the UK (same as me) and one in Australia. The conversation was basically this:
"need to consider that we're playing on a NA server with relatively high ping and I know I have died loads of times when I can clearly see I am out of the area of effect but the high ping has skewed things…… that makes it harder".

Certainly makes sense, and the login screen does sometimes show my connection as being 'Poor'.

Definitely then, you are not bad at the game, your connection/processing levels are handicapping you. Once you improve those you may find it similar to taking weights off your ankles and realizing you are faster than you thought!

Control is definitely a personal preference thing, and FF14 works well with a variety of input options.

Personally, I use a keyboard and MMO mouse, though my use of the actual keyboard is almost entirely restricted to movement and tab for targetting. I didn't grow up PC gaming so I never really adapted to using a keyboard for it's full gaming functionality. As such I have my frequently used actions (most/all of my rotation depending on class, short cooldowns, etc.) assigned to the MMO mouse side buttons and I actually end up *gasp*just clicking for the rest. Is it the most 100% optimal way to play? Probably not overall, but it's what works for me and I rarely/never have any input related issues in any of the content I do.

The PS4/PS5 controllers are somewhat the smaller and may be better for you. Can even use bluetooth functionality if your pc has bluetooth antenna. Hmm! Just doing quick google search brought up something called "PowerA mini controller" for xbox one. I may have to fricken try that! It looks smexy. 360 controller also works better for me as is less chonky then the xbox one controllers (way way cheaper too).

Playstation 5 controller. The Playstation controllers are nice because they're smaller and they also have the touch pad in case you need a quick "mouse"

There are people that play this game that believe it is essentially hardcore raiders vs casual players. You see this mostly from the casual player base this idea that there should be no challenging content and everything should be designed around only casual play. These are typically your players that will throw out terms such as elitest, elite, gate keeping, toxicity, and minority/majority claims ect. They are also the people that will shut down feedback or criticism to claim the game is perfect the way it is and if you don't like it go unsub. Really just terrible people in general. Is what these people do not realize is like the world it takes different types of players to make the game function right. The idea of the casual vs hardcore is nothing more than ignorance and both types of content and players should exist to maintain a healthy online player base.

His whole claim is that the dev team has to filter the majority which according to him "the hardcore elite" is majority of the player base when in fact it makes maybe 15% - 20% of the total player base if you look at the rate of savage content clears and participation. In a nut shell it is best to just ignore him like a homeless person begging for change everyday at the corner and trying to tell you wild conspiracy theories.

What MMORPG that is made for you people in the past three years or five years or even ten years that was made for you people is still one of the most top played games today?

Games made for you people do not sell well at all. In fact FF11 was lucky because it had a brand name and came about before WoW success. Sadly though that is what killed FFXIV 1.0 when they tried to make the game again for you people and they had to completely shut it down and make a new game.

Oooh thank you both! For some reason I always thought PS4 controllers didn't work with desktops/Windows. Right now I have a MMO mouse/keyboard combination, which helps a little bit, but my memory being bad enough, I can't always remember my keybindings lol. I'll have to look into a PS5 controller, the touchpad for a "mouse" sounds handy as heck.

People might try to claim this or that, but in regards to control setup, there is no one optimal way to play. People have different sized hands, different comfort levels with things like a keyboard or mouse or controller, and different behaviors and ways they hold their hands or position things around them. That's why it's so important we all find what works best for us and why it's challenging to explain the benefits of our setups to someone else.

I saw someone's stream once where she was getting flack for mouse clicking some abilities and it was like "Does it work? Yes? Then let her play the way that's most comfortable". It's silly what people judge others on sometimes.
