I appreciated you were at least able to just tell Zenos to shove it instead of being forced to accept his perspective.
They can't reasonably allow you a completely different course of action, but being able to at least express disapproval instead of offering differently-worded ways of agreeing (As is very often the case) is welcome.
Stormblood in particular had several instances where I wish I could've said something like "This is a horrible idea, but if you insist...", but either didn't get a dialogue choice at all or could only offer unwavering support and confidence.

I figured it was probably Zenos, but it was more than him who was a problem for me and I wasn't given the ability to express it.
They shouldn't have had him say if the WoL wanted to leave he wouldn't stop them, it set up the belief that you could decline his challenge. I suppose the fight had to happen because he needed to 'die', but it wouldn't have been out of character for him to block our way. He'd already tried it on the moon before deciding we were too distracted to give him a thrill. :P
Nah, that was a crucial part of demonstrating his character development and that he had actually genuinely reflected and grown, in his Zenos-like way. It's important for Zenos that, as a character, once he had helped us deal with Endsinger, he both a) waited patiently for us to finish talking with Meteion before addressing us, and b) offered to let us walk away if we wanted to. I get being frustrated with the gameplay conceit of not having that choice, but at that point, it would, in fact, have been out of character for him to block us. Zenos has learned to actually be a Good Friend (!?!?) and what it means to actually care for someone! It's why I love his arc. He's gone from self-centered demands ("I will have my contest!") to sincerely offering the WoL to share in the only form of happiness he understands - because finally being able to see WoL as their own person, Zenos also sees there's a part of WoL that's difficult for them to express in the midst of all the heroics, and thus offers them that space, if they want. They shouldn't have had him say if the WoL wanted to leave he wouldn't stop them, it set up the belief that you could decline his challenge. Zenos owns, okay. Would hang out with my bestie on the Island Sanctuary and challenge him to Verminion and Chocobo Racing. Sorry to disrupt the topic a bit, though!
As for me, since you can sometimes disapprove but never actually just decline (or accept, depending) and then not do the thing, I'd rather go back exclusively to stoically nodding. Works just as well, and then there wouldn't be a need to feel disgust towards the writers for making your character do things you'd rather they didn't (or vice versa).
Also, all the extra posing they started adding in HW didn't add anything to me considering how often the reaction is off by a few lightyears, especially egregious during and in everything after ShB where the WoL spends most of the time slack-jawed. Quit being shocked by everything, dammit!
Endwalker.
Kept me hooked the entire time, where as shadowbringers was kind of slow in the beginning.
I don't want to go back to ARR levels of lobotomized WoL. EW was already a regression where my character just went along with everyone else and didn't have an independent thought in their head. One of my most memorable moments was telling Alphinaud at the beginning of SB that Ala Mhigo wasn't my problem. It didn't change anything, but it sure felt good to say it!As for me, since you can sometimes disapprove but never actually just decline (or accept, depending) and then not do the thing, I'd rather go back exclusively to stoically nodding. Don't remind me that we've lost yet another character with potential in favor of hanging out with... Krile. *sigh* The antagonists in this game are written so much more interesting than the protagonists. Then they end up on the chopping block while the Scions are eternal.
This one? I gave an example. EW for whatever reason was particularly bad about not offering diverse dialog options. I'm not saying they have to have any meaningful impact, but this go around the way I felt about characters and events did not remotely match what the writers were trying to push and I certainly would've appreciated being able to express that. I don't understand the point of giving 3 dialog options that are just different ways of saying the same thing.
Dumbest EW moment was when they were trying to get everyone to the teleporter to the moon in Garlmald and the final days is happening. And all these monsters are killing people and people are freaking out and turning into more monsters and the scions are in trouble. And here comes the WoL slowly walking to join the fight as if he could give two **** about what is happening.
I feel the forced perspectives are pretty bad in all the game and I kind of really don't like it... but other games aren't better about it since you either have no personality or your character is completely different from you. I particularily don't like ardbert and would get upset when my character would look sad for him during the 5.x quests.I don't want to go back to ARR levels of lobotomized WoL.
