Getting near to a traditional Samurai would essentially require us to be capable of equipping multiple weapons... in a game in which we're incapable of having more than a single (pair of) weapon(s) at any given time and changing from a longsword (DRK) to a longsword (GLD) could cost you 98% of your stats.

I would add, there is nothing stopping you from role playing as a sort of Samurai. There are weapons and gear that could easily make your dragoon and bard appear as a samurai, even using the same parts (like scorpion harness).

There is even a naginata polearm you can get.

    Nah.
I always figured that the samurai we got is more like Musashi than Tadakatsu.
Like more ronin kind of vibes instead of sengoku warlord kind of vibes.
    And I'm ok with that.

OOOH Beastmaster! But I always want whip for beastmaster
Lol, true! xD But what if we served ourselves, thus giving us the right to wear armor? :3

I would prefer they wield a whip, too. But I'm always open to whatever crazy combinations the FFXIV team can come up with when it comes to weapons and classes. Maybe we'll get a Beastmaster class that uses a crossbow instead. You never know! xD

Which is why I came up with my own version of a traditional Samurai that used a fighting style similar to Firion's from FF Dissidia where you occasionally call forth the extra weapons you wield, manipulating them like how a Kami possessed set of weapons like the primal Susano functioned for various different attacks. They would just be limited to only appearing as skills/abilities you would use in battle on occasion while the Naginata would be your primary weapon and a crossbow being your basic ranged weapon for basic ranged attacks and maybe a poison DoT.

You just reminded me of a glamour I made for my Bard a few months ago, I used the HW Far Eastern chest piece gear you can get from the old couple in exchange for hunt tokens at the Forgotten Knight, the headband guard from the latest Far Eastern Mogstation glamour along with its black sandle-sock foot gear (if my memory is correct on the latter, along with the Hakama leg gear from the open kimono(?) chest bandaged mogstation glamour. Oh, and the HW Far Eastern Bard bow weapon, too! I thought it was a really cool glamour that reminded me of Far Eastern archers. Gonna have to use that glamour again, thanks!

As for the Dragoon gear...Sadly, Viera can't wear the Stormsblood head gear that has those traditional armor sets, otherwise I'd be larping around with them on my Dark Knight and Reaper jobs right now... :'(

Are you sure about that? Have you not seen the documentary on how Lalafell are born?

Just rename current Samurai to Ronin, cause that's what they actually are (or Ashigaru, as they were the peasant class coscripts of Samurai) , Make the new Samurai Tank off FFT with auras to boost stats for them selves & others. Give them paired Katana & wakizashi, two Katana, or better yet Odachi.

It depends on what point in history we're talking about. Early samurai were mounted archers, only transitioning to infantry in later periods, circa 1300 and definitely into the Sengoku Period and later Tokugawa Shogunate.

Personally I think this one is more accurate than a tank Samurai. Katanas are not super durable so you'd never want to tank with them, and their armor wasn't as defensive as a western knight (but were known for great bow and spear skills, neither of which the Samurai uses in this game hahaha... but in FFXI they actually had a good weapon rating with those which was a neat nod to history). Not that, I feel, most think about the armored Samurai but more often the Ronin like visual instead.

Anyway even as a DD it's all fantasy lol, so it's not a great evil to want a tank or a DD or whatever- I just feel that if we had to find the nearest expression that DD is probably more accurate than tank (my imo). Given the common visual, armor, and fact the weapon (katana) has a history of being relatively brittle (but exceptionally sharp).

Hello players, would you like to play as Samurai or Samurai

I'm gonna be real with you, chief. They'll never add this as you see it in your mind. Your best option is to just work with what's in the job system and role play.

If they added anything like Firion in dissidia, they'd probably call it weaponmaster (That's what he was, right?). And even then he used more than just traditional weaponry.
