Using "lottery" was a massive mistake on Square Enix's part when describing the new system, and this response proves it. They should have called it a raffle instead. And I have won a couple of raffles in my life (one for a pretty nice TV, in fact).

I'm all for the lottery system. Everyone that wants a shot, gets a shot. No need to stand around and click a placard.
I think players need to consider people other than themselves. Sure, maybe some players want to stand around and click a placard. But most don't. And the willingness to stand around and do something pointlessly with a high possibility of no-gain is an outdated MMO concept. The way I see it, lottery works for everyone. Even the players that want to click a placard, they don't have to. They get their ticket and move on. And for players that don't want to click a placard, they get their ticket and move on.
