What is the main story?

The original Main Story missions were left on a cliff hanger. Even more, the first "arc" for the city the player started in was never really finished either.

The Grand Company Missions seem to be a branch of the Main story, but will anything be done with our Path Companion? Will we see the return of the NPC that helped us in the original cutscenes?

Is this all being put on hold to work toward the story that leads up to the fall of Dalamud?

Yes. The main scenario it's halted for now to leave space for grand companies and meteor. In 2.0 it will be resumed

Seventh Umbral Era storyline to give way to new storyline after version 2.0, and will not be replayable.

My companion in FFXI is a greedy whore who won't share a single bit of those multi-million gil contracts she's getting. My companion in FFXIV is Shantotto. I think I prefer my FFXIV one.
