Precisely, but a lot of the responses here are "NO! I don't care about graphics!" or "My machine might not be able to handle it!".
All the major unaddressed complaints about FFXIV have to do with engine limitations and how the game was built around them....
WHERE IS THIS KETTLE EVERYONE KEEPS INTRODUCING ME TO?
I think it's worth it long term.

If they want the game to run as a whole for the next 10 years they will need bigger changes, not only clealing/refreshing old content. If nothing changes then they can just add next expansions of very similar type to the current ones. There will be difficulty to innovate on encounters and any extra features like say Island Sanctuaries will take more and more time to develop and/or get limited in what can be done.
This topic is quite common for existing games vs freshly launched ones. We have WoW and FF14 that existed for years vs recently launched or launching MMOs that are new and have no legacy content or technical debt.

Sounds like a horrible idea to me.
I would stop playing if we get even less content.
It's amazing how many people say we need an engine upgrade without knowing what that actually entails. lol

Why the trade off?? se is filthy rich.. I want both content and the upgrade.
♥ MORE HIGH HEELS + INSTANCED HOUSING! ♥!

Blizzard is constantly upgrading the backend and frontend of WoW. Even when content is trash their technical side is pretty good (aside of random performance regression after bigger patches). They have native Apple and Windows ARM clients, they do from time to time patches that are technical only and when like auction house was hitting performance limits they just implemented a completelly new one with better features as well. Right now they are quite hard on cloud and distributed microservices. They still have to keep old expansions content though.
With increased income SE really has to become more agile and spend more $ on the technical aspects of the game or things will degrade more and more.
definitely no
This ship has sailed. I think it's more likely we see a new FF MMORPG than they try to bring this one into the modern day.
And ideally, that is what should happen. No matter what they do, they are locked into the design choices that were made for them. Even if they went in and rebuilt the entire engine, they've built for eight years on top of that. They would keep much of what was there.
Alas, it is time for a new game.
