Only a few forum poster will be willing to have an honest discussion about any giving topic. Rest are trying to win arguments, get reactions or pushing like champs a certain agenda no matter how much mental gymnastics are involved. As with most things like this.
The problem isn't people who don't like the MSQ, the problem is that a lot of people who didn't like it want to shove it in everyones face or are extremely hyperbolic about it.
It becomes hard to have a discussion or take it seriously when in 9 out of 10 cases people talk about it like it's the worst thing ever created.
It's the same with TLOU2 which you brought up there are very valid criticisms one can have about the game and so do I.
I didn't like it at all.
But TLOU2 wasn't a crime against humanity, and playing the game wasn't literaly torture.
Edit: This isn't even getting into people who boosted ( or skipped all dialogue ) and yet feel like they can talk about the MSQ.
If you're skipping the cutscenes then why do you need to have an opinion on the MSQ tho.I must say that I've almost never seen that kind of rhetoric directed against the MSQ in FF14. Most of the time it's just something benign like "the story is so boring does it ever get good", and someone else chimes in and says "yeah I'm just skipping all the cutscenes", and that's enough fuse to light up the fireworks.
Regarding your edit though, if you're talking about that one particular streamer (or multiple) then yeah, they kinda deserve the eye rolls.
You're not even engaging with the MSQ so having an opinion on it will obviously be met with negative reactions.
If you don't like the MSQ, then that's fine. Not everything is for everyone. But if you post about it in a public place, people are allowed to disagree and discuss it. If you don't want to discuss it, then just keep scrolling.
Achieving understanding that you may not always like the same thing everyone else does and this is okay can be most difficult. Especially when what you like is core part of self because any attack on that thing is obviously slight against you personally. Now you go from "I disagree but this is okay" to "How dare you!" at mach speed.
Then you have those that slogged through some of the most abysmal quest design I have ever seen suffering from serious case of sunk costs.
Disagreeing and discussing are not the same thing as launching into a variety of ad hominem attacks, which is what usually happens.
Mentors don't usually disagree when people complain about the tedium of the MSQ. They usually understand but there is little they can say other than that it's required and that the story and other aspects get better with each patch. The cult-like fanaticism surrounding the game's story is honestly scary at times.
Here are two very easy things for the fanatics to comprehend:
1. It is perfectly valid for someone to not like the story and still enjoy the rest of FF14!
2. Everyone has different tastes and there is enough content in FF14 that isn't the MSQ for new players! (vets might feel differently though...)
I don't care what people say, that this is an "RPGMMO" (idiotic statement), or this is a "Final Fantasy first", or whatever other excuse. Next time someone says they find the MSQ boring, lay off the well trodden path of common refrains and just say "that's fine" and continue on with your day.
I don't get why so many mentors feel the need to beat sprouts who complain about the MSQ into submission!! Stop telling people to unsub or quit or that "this game is not for you" when someone complains about the MSQ. Maybe they're all the way in ShB while skipping cutscenes because... Oh God, can you believe it, they like other parts of the game enough to tolerate the story!
If they complain about the quality of the story and say that the story itself is not good, then mentors usually disagree with that because there are very few people that think it's not a good story, so those that say it's not a good story are probably trolling and trying to get a reaction from people they know like the story.
It is important to explain the importance of the MSQ before saying "that's fine". Some people skip cut scenes without understanding that all the content in the game, including the music, visuals and game mechanics, are all part of the story. The story creates excitement and hype to fight the next boss. It gives you a reason and people who don't do the story are often lacking the excitement that everyone else has for the next patch, because to them it's just a few more bosses, while to everyone else these bosses have meaning and are very exciting next chapters in the story. The visuals, the music and the mechanics have a greater meaning that is lost on those who didn't do the story and so it's less exciting for them.
If the person understands how the meaning of all these things will be lost on them, then I accept it and say "that's fine then", as long as they understand what they will be missing.
Skipping cutscenes is a symptom of a player not finding the MSQ, or part of it, interesting enough to bother. Can also has something to do with how passive MSQ has become, we invest more time watching than doing. I never skipped anything relate to MSQ, or even secondary quest, but I totally get if someone do.
Anyway, someone saying "MSQ bad" is their opinion and not going to reduce my enjoyment from it, even if I wish FFXIV team change a few things about it. If someone is particulary annoying about that ignore/block always works!

Endwalker doesn't deserve nearly that high a rating.
Seriously, all entertainment rating and reviews sites on the internet are garbage...and I do mean all. All ratings are hopelessly tainted by fanboys and haters.
