Like what, exactly? Do you have a better suggestion? Tomes are already targeted gearing, bad luck protection, and a slow but consistent gear path for non-raiders all rolled into one. What do you suggest they do to improve it?

Of course it's time gated. It has to be, because the alternative is people running a hundred dungeons and clearing the raids a dozen times in the first week, and then spending the next 4 months complaining about how there's nothing to do.

I think it's fine. It's clear from a business perspective why it exists, but they want you to be playing for months, not just a couple of weeks.

Besides, gearing isn't even that important for like 80% of players. Just get full crafted gear and you are set until like 6.2

So when 6.1 rolls by, we will get the first third of the 24-man raid, which will also drop gear in the same ilvl as the 2nd tomes.
Like that doubles the amount of ilvl 590 gear you can get each week in a way.

I will say that I'm sure there could be a theoretically better gearing system, but I don't know what it would look like. With how XIV is balanced, I don't think sidegrades would work really. And it does feel pretty pointless to get BiS outside of ultimate tiers because there's literally nothing to use it on since those who are serious enough to get BiS will just get new crafted sets as soon as the new tier drops.

I think the current system is 100% functional. It works as it should, but aside from glamour there isn't really any long term joy from gearing up. But with how tightly XIV is balanced, I'm not sure what an alternate system would look like to keep you using the same set for a longer period of time.

I think gearing is fine. As a raid tier progress more sources of gear are available. 24 Raids, new extreme weaposn and crafted gear probably will have an upgrade using regular tomes. Having enough gear to comfortable clear any kind of content is there so there is no artificial gate. Having the ability to only BIS one or two classes per patch cycle I say it's ok.

    Also, gear has three uses:

    - Glamour.

    - Soft nerf of the hardest content for those players that need extra stats (nothing wrong with this).

    - Ultimate if current raid tier happens to have it.

I don't know, FFXIV it's an MMO so I think it's ok to have long term goals. Also just because one char can be everything that does not mean every single class should feel like a main.

It's ridiculous how alt job unfriendly the MMORPG with the feature of having all jobs in 1 character is.

Because gearing more than 1 job is so bad and leveling alt jobs takes so long, most people will focus in "maining" a single job.

Because most people focus on "mains", homogenization is a thing to prevent unbalance in high-end raids so no one feels like they need to spend a long time managing multiple jobs.

If I could keep 3+ jobs fully geared within a patch cycle I wouldn't care at all if so and so party comp was better for so and so fight. Because I could prepare myself better for that situation and picking the right job for a fight should always have been part of the prep... You know, like most jRPGs.

Going to copy my response to a previous thread along the same lines:

While the forums/reddit/discord likely bias toward no lifers, I would suggest that the player base as a whole strongly biases toward the other end of the spectrum. That being said, EX, savage, etc. offer alternative gearing paths for people who want to do that content to 'get ahead' of the weekly tomestone cap. All in all, I find the mix of capped tomestones giving good gear over time and savage giving better gear faster to be a good mix for different sorts of players.

It is bad and it's the sort of thing that people will parrot "it's necessary to keep people subbed, it's fine, people are impatient", yet if the devs changed it sub count would remain the same as ever, people would still raid all tier for fun and everyone would say it's great.

A good example is the weapon coffer from EX. That was suggested plenty of times in the past and shot down. But now it's a thing, there isn't a single complaint or issue.

It's fun to play alt classes. It isn't fun to know they'll have worse ilv and have to wait several months to catch them up with your main. There's no reason for that.

While I think that "maybe" people would complain about stuff if they could gear up so fast. Realistically if you it took a month to fully deck out a class. There is 19 classes to level up and gear up so 19 months worth of content to do. that's a little over a year. Plus there are other things to do like mount farming etc. So I don't think there isn't something you could run out of honestly
