A few studies have suggested that the USA is hit pretty hard from it, while the rest of the non-English world isn't. In NA, it's been growing from the 1990s when Pennywise hit their screens. It would be interesting if there is a correlation with Hollywood's horror, and the fear of them.

But it's not something really studied in any great numbers, so I am sort of taking the few studies I read with a grain - nay, a tonne - of salt. One interesting number in one study was around 1.2% of people in the USA are coulrophobic, making it one of the more common phobias in that country.
