Bought the game yesterday

It's my first time ever playing FFXIV and I have never played FFXI so this kind of MMO is new to me. I bought a PC controller, am running the game smoothly, and am very happy about the graphics and how there seems to be a lot you can do in this game.

I've only been playing 1 full day so I haven't actually seen many people on my server yet, haven't partied or talked to a single person in game. This is my first Forum post too.

When I started playing, I started in Gridania and followed the main quest chain which had a few cutscenes, a lot of talking that I read, and it eventually ended with the adventurers guild lady telling me to go to the first camp and do some leve quests. I took some battle leves, did them, and repeated that like 3 times. I've done like 8+ of these level 1 quests and now I'm given no direction where to go. I talked to so many NPCs in the city but none of them had a quest marker over their head, and I can't figure out how to advance in the story line. I've played for about 10 hours now yet all I have done is walked all around the pretty city, and walked down to that first nooby camp to do some leves and botany.

I have no idea where to go now...Please help >.<

I'm going to use this thread to ask all my stupid questions as they come to me since I have no one in game to ask.

right now you really just need to level

as you level, your npc pearl you got from your nation will eventualy start to glow, this means your next story quest is ready

but in general, you really just need to level to really get going, i suggest uldah as a place to go to find parties as most people hang out there

Welcome! The best thing I can tell you to do is to talk to the guildleve counter NPC and find out what your next-level camp is called. Go back out to the Shroud and look for it in map and make sure you get there and keep at it. It's safe to say that if the camp is level 10, you can head over there at level 8 or 9. Guildleves are an immense help, especially in the lower levels.

If you need help learning how to play, the Lodestone's play guide is very in-depth now, so you can see if any questions are answered in there first. I'm assuming you know how to get there since you have to go through it to get to these forums, but if not follow this link.

Things should start opening up at around level 10, and if you want to be around more people players spend most of their time in Ul'dah, so you can take an Airship there or go by foot.

Ok first thing I'll do after writing this is check the "lodestone's play guide." I enjoy reading and learning more about the game so thank you for that link Estellios.

I came to this game from World of Warcraft so I would have never guessed you were supposed to grind monsters to level fast. World of Warcrafts leveling is all just following quest hub to quest hub, and you get such little exp for randomly killing monsters your level that it's never worth it. Now that I know it's a good idea to seek out mobs my level and kill them, I'll do that while saving up some Level quests.

Ok so story quests just come available to me as I level... Lol I was looking all over for where to travel to in order to progress through the story.

Why is Ul'dah so popular? I didn't think the desert looked nice which is why I chose Gridania. I'm happy to know I can travel to any of the 3 cities at any time without consequence. Is there an easy way to find a Linkshell other than sit in the city and ask everyone 1 by 1 if I can join? I don't want to be annoying haha

Alright, I'm going to head back in the game and figure some stuff out. I've been talking to every single NPC hoping the game will make more and more sense. So happy my thread got so many replies and in a short amount of time.

Well, you could ask everyone at once using /shout. No one should get annoyed unless you spam it every 5 seconds.
