I don't entirely disagree, but I would say it's at least a good foundation. The major flaw it has is that everything it has now should probably be what it has at, like, 60. Seems a bit of a shame that we're up to 90 now and still utilizing the 50 primals.
That said, I suppose it's kinda obvious that any attempt at cherry-picking which further primals to incorporate would naturally result in an uproar that someone's favorite wasn't picked, or someone's least favorite was, and all around there would still be more complaining.....
I see a lot of Summoners in duties I run the role must have something to offer. I won't get to leveling it on my main for awhile yet.
Flashy animations that people desired, and ease of use that people also asked for, constantly complaining about its old rotation lol. We reap what the lowest common denominator sows etc.
I saw a video of someone compiling its entire rotation into one macro or something, and over the course of 3 minutes or something, it only misses one GCD the whole time, in spite of being a macro or something like that.

"I thought that my invincible power would hold the world captive, leaving me in a freedom undisturbed. Thus night and day I worked at the chain with huge fires and cruel hard strokes. When at last the work was done and the links were complete and unbreakable, I found that it held me in its grip." - Rabindranath Tagore
For myself, I don't think it's in too bad of a spot. As Hasrat pointed it, it makes for a good foundation for more to be added to it.
When the next expansion comes, I expect we'll be seeing some of the old primal abilities our Egi used to have being reused as spells we can cast after summoning them. Thus giving SMN more to do.
That, and adding Shiva, Ramuh and Leviathan as new Egi summons to finally complete the other half of the elemental wheel we already possess. Along with at least one new Demi Egi summon, like Alexander or Odin.

Summoner is presently the most popular caster on both NA and EU, beaten on JP by Red Mage. It's clear that straightforward job designs without unnecessary bloat are what people gravitate towards to. The job isn't dead by any means.
The gameplay feels okay to me. Not great, but it's not a finger-cramping mess like the previous version. I just wish they'd tone back the flash a bit, it's painful to watch.
It was fun before; it's fun now.
I pressed ABCXYZ before; now I press ACBZXY. In either case my character does some sparkly things and then enemies die. /shrug

Is it popular based on it's merits, or is it simply being used a lot because it's the class that got the most changes?
Just saying the fisher job has more buttons to press and depth to it than Sum imo.
