The Japanese word for "planet" is the same word they use for "star". I guess they translated it to "star" for poetic or fantasy reasons because I would like to think that their translation team is better than making that mistake.

Edit: I would like to see them make a giant drill in 7.0 when we take the fight to the mole people and have it also called a "starship".

Also hasn’t some forms of older English also use the term “star” to mean planet as well?

That I don't know, but the term planet does from Ancient Greek 'planētes asteres' which means 'wandering stars' or 'planētai' meaning 'wanderers'

    Yeah.
In antiquity, the 7 planets referred to the 7 celestial bodies that wandered the sky rather than staying in place, like stars.
The Sun, The Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn.
Also the days of the week.

Star just referred to the fixed lights in the sky.
Even today, I don't think it's rare to hear it used to refer to other worlds when speaking poetically.

I believe in antiquity they didn't know the difference between planets and stars. everything in the sky that wasn't black was a star.

The old nickname for venus is the morning star
