Scions (EW ending spoilers)

This is something that's been in my head for a while.


Anybody else feels like all of their character growth had already peaked in SHB?

EW finished some things such as the twins' relationship with their parents and Urianger's secrecy. But some of them also felt somewhat stagnant such as Graha and Thancred.

Is it time for us to get new companions?

This is why I was hoping that they were going to all die. I would have appreciated them more and then it would also ensure we get a new cast going forward.

I really hope they're gonna be away for a while. Imo they're overdone at this point. You can keep them in the background like Tataru. Please introduce new characters

... I kinda figure this is what the whole "disbanding" thing is about. Ending the ascian/zodiark/hydaelyn thing and how much the scions are intertwined with that. They'll cameo from now on but we should be meeting new people.

I don't really feel like it mattered, or better put that it's something that they constantly need to put on display, for a character to be believable and relatable they also need to feel normal sometimes, not every moment of their lives needs to be a character defining moment. Sometimes a character is there just to exist as they are, to be themselves and bring whomever that is to the table, and a lack of growth doesn't need to be seen as a bad thing, it means they're grounded, found themselves and you get to see them display and shine as that person as opposed to trying to discover themselves.
That doesn't mean they can't still have growth, Y'shtola for example is very settled into her young Master "Matoya" self by the end of ShB, and doesn't really go through much growth during EW, you just get to see more of the character she's settled into, but she is still growing, you get to see under the sas and stern talking mystery seeker is a rather soft soul, some subtle dialogue here and there, most notably in acknowledging her promise to Runa and if you chose to have here be the one knocking on your door at night and then at the end when she questions if she should start making records of all her discoveries, something up until now she'd actively avoided unless told to write a report. So even a character as settled as Y'shtola is still growing, albeit far slower and less pronounced than say the twins who were still trying to find themselves.

Though honestly I feel like this is all moot as I feel the whole point of EW's ending was to keep the party together while opening up plenty of room for new companions. Prior to ShB, the Scions were a team but also a collective, tackling their own problems from their own angles, they only grouped up if the threat or issue demanded it, which is where things stand now. We'll likely go back to only having one or two of the main cast with us per activity (MSQ,Side story, Restoration, Relic, E.c.t) and gain new or have returning characters adventure with us for a time, then at some point 7.0 or beyond the Scions will need unite for something big, rince, repeat.

I think that's exactly why they phasing the Scion out.

Again, what's with this obsession about everyone have to die thing? There are tons of way to introduce new characters without having to killing off the old one. Is this a Western culture, or is this a WoW thing where you always need to kill the current lead before the next one?

The current Scion probably will take the role of mentor for the next generation. This way they don't have to show any more growth, but can still provide the occasional flair to the story. In fact, look at the "Trail of ... " which is one of the flag-ship JRPG series. It doesn't over-develop characters, and it rarely kill off anyone. So after over a decade the world contain a large cast of characters that take turn making cameo experience and mentor the next cast, which make the world feel alive. It build a world with a lot of connections, relationships old and news. Something it wouldn't be able to do had it just killed off people whenever it's done with their story arc.

The next expansion is probably going to have us meet some new traveling companions now that the scions are "disbanded". They'll return when the story calls for it, and i'm sure we might see more of G'raha because...you know... he just got here, and the story brought up his home land of Corvos every 5 minutes without ever taking us there.

The adventures will probably be more grounded for a bit as they lay the foundations for the next story arc.

I can see the patches (if they follow the traditional storytelling cycle) being a sort of epilogue for the scions up until the .3 patch, which will transition us off into whatever they're cooking up next.

Placing bets, the .3 trial is going to Zenos's finale. He'll either be the boss or have some weird catharsis and die...or both... We left him at the edge of the universe there and i was suspicious about it the entire time.

Why you want them to die? That would not have been good writing.

I am guessing in the following expansions they will became less and less prominent. While they will of course continue showing up, I think we might make new recurring friends in the new lands we will be exploring in Etheirys. Though I get a feeling G'raha might be tagging along more often than the other Scions.

I was thinking it was gonna be G'raha and Estinien taking more of a center stage, maybe even Gaius at some point.
