I like nu-SMN. I also liked the gameplay of old summoner, though the highlights were easily the demi-summon phases.

I kinda like how the new 'normal' summons work. They still change how you operate but they themselves act like FF summons of old.
Cast the spell, big guy shows up, blows the enemy the fuck out, rinse repeat. It feels good in my opinion, better than it was prior in my opinion, but I get why people may dislike it.

Overall, feels good! I especially like that it goes from learning these three baby summons, to a demi bahamut, expanded upon with a demi phoenix, and then caps off with bringing your baby summons up to the power of demi's in flavor. Really cool stuff.
The gameplay feels good, and I don't mind it's simplicity since in my opinion summoner was never incredibly complex, just had a lot of jank to unpack that added depth in non-accessible ways.

I do think their numbers may need a buff, but that's just numbers tweaking. What's there is fun for me.

Curing Waltz is old and busted. The new hotness is Benediction Boogie. Make it happen, Squeenix!

I hear yah, though I always thought of the old Summoner as complex. That may be due to my absolute refusal to memorize the rotation for any class and just go with what seems right. In the case of the Summoner, I probably got something close to the rotation, but I still made mistakes because I was sometimes unsure what to do next. Perhaps, "complex" wasn't the right word, but it requires you to optimize while thinking on your feet within a 2 sec GCD window, which was certainly something. With what many called a 2-min rotation, I felt my heart pounding a few times while playing ShB Summoner, especially during boss fights.

Yeah, I'd say that it's optimizations got pretty tight, but in terms of rotation it's really just long. In fighting games, you break down long combos into chunks connected by difficult parts, often links.
Those 'links' in old summoner rotations were few and far between to me. Really just the weaves and annoying devotion timings, but even that isn't necessarily engaging difficulty to me. I'd say that it's long, and if you tried to memorize the old rotation as it was you'd just hurt your head a little. It's better to think of it as just a few key points strung together by a series of spam not to unlike BRD, if you wanna really tick off summoner mains with a comparison lol.

I will say it was certainly a unique job. Nothing else really did what it did for it's rotation, and it does suck that while it seems most people prefer nu-SMN the old fans are kinda left with not a lot. Reminds me of when machinist changed in ShB, actually. Most people love it, but it's old fans are just kinda left with nothing.

I was really hoping they’d make summoner something other than ruin mage with this expansion. They instead compounded on the problem, but changed the color of ruin

Only at level 72, any level before then it's just regular plain old Ruin. They didn't even bother to give Ruin 1, 2, 3, Outburst or Tri-Disaster palette swaps.

I was once a tadpole of Limsa. Now I'm a tree hugger of Gridania.

Seems like if I just played summoner without someones unenthusiastic opinion good or bad. I'd actually enjoy the job way more despite how it plays and feels. Somehow walking on the fence seems to be more of an objective take away. Due to keyboard warriors taking offense to objective truths or fighting against subjective whining. Maybe try playing the game for once as designed. Instead of being offended by the air you breath. Since that is the reality of what I've read in this forum. Don't even care enough to reply after this post.

Why would they spend time creating a different spell effect for a spell that we virtually never use? Why would you be casting ruin during any of the primal phases? Waste of resources.

I believe his point is that before 72, gemshine is just Ruin, and it's the same (visually) Ruin no matter what primal you deployed for it.
