    Lower Quality...

i think there MIGHT be some hardcore players out there that would use it for the greater challenge in crafting. but then why not just make the mats normal quality to start with? still doesn't seem to be too logical.

ANYHOW, why would someone want to lower an items quality at a 1:1 ratio?

Personally, when I was gathering materials for mass quick synths I didnt want to get hq materials and usually just dropped them because I'm always short on inventory space. This will help with that.

Lower quality is useful for turn ins where you have to turn in a specific amount of items.

Let's say a quest requires turning in 6 Iron Ingots. With the way XIV works, you can't turn in 1 HQ and 5 NQ ones. Now you can just lower the quality of the HQ one instead of having to get another NQ one.

As others have said, this is a nice change for resource management/ leve turn ins. Sure you're gonna want to turn in HQ products, but if you make a few NQs while trying they're useless until you have enough for a full 'set' (however many that might be for a leve) so that's useful. More than that, there are a number of instances where you're gathering mats and don't want 2 separate stacks for the same thing (HQ and NQ) since you're just going to mass craft them into something else, either with quick synth or the recipe is so low level that the quality of the ingredients is negligible. Then there are also recipes that can't be HQ'd for which gathering HQ ingredients is pointless.

In a couple words. FC crafting. a bunch of us were making some stuff for 3rd lvl FC merchant wall. it requires 165 turn ins per item. that means you need 55 HQ or 55 NQ. since it has to be handed in in thirds. so we just auto crafted most of the stuff we needed and then just downgraded anything that HQed so we could turn it all in.

Leveling DoH jobs bonus exp is determined by how much quality you add to the synth. If you start out with HQ mats, that's a chunk of potential exp thrown away.

Storage space of low level items, it's not worth having two spaces for mahogany lumber, and it's not worth HQing them all.

Lucis/masterbook recipes required HQ/NQ of token synths, and they patched around 2.5 where you had a chance to HQ with 0 quality (it always said 1%, but it was really 0%).

I think it was mainly introduced for collectibles. If you gather a collectible, but it's collectability rating isn't high enough you can't do anything with it. But you can use Lower Quality to remove the collectability from it and make it sellable/useable again.
